thanks for your sensitivity, honey....

I guess I'll continue on being a slut because I wear stilettos and a lesbian when I wear my birkenstocks around the house?

Yes, apparently, I'm very slutty, too. And I look cheap b/c many of my clothes come from Wet Seal, Forever 21 and the like. Sorry, I don't make a lot of money right now, so I have to shop where I can afford it.  And by the way, not a day goes by where I don't get complimented on what I'm wearing, which just goes to show you, style cannot be bought.

But, here's my list (I think it's pretty standard to what other people have said) and my reasons for not wearing these items are b/c they are uncomfortable for me or they just don't work with my body type.

  • High-waisted pants

  • Tapered pants (they just do not work with muscular thighs)

  • Pleated pants (I don't want to add any 'puff' to my stomach!)

  • Panty-hose (lord, help me if I ever get a job that requires them b/c they turn me into a squirming child. They are just so uncomfortable!)

  • Mules (my feet slide out of them and I fall)

  • Midriff tops (I feel like they are for someone who is younger than me, like the high school crowd)

  • Chunky shoes (they just aren't flattering on me)

  • Baggy clothes (I feel frumpy)

  • Feather jewelry (I just feel ridiculous wearing pieces of a bird)

  • Christmas sweaters (My mother loooooves these things and I just don't get it!)

  • Red (I do wear this on rare occassions, but it's kind of harsh with my coloring)

  • Navy blue (ditto the above, although I don't think I own one navy item)

I don't have anything from Wet Seal or Forever 21 (don't think I've ever seen either one of those stores) but I do have stuff from Delia's which I think is comparable - it doesn't matter where it comes from, it's all in how you wear it - you are so right in saying "style cannot be bought."

Now the hose - I work for one of the largest corporations in the world and have to wear hose if I have an important meeting or am presenting.  I've gone sans hose a few times this summer when I knew I would be sitting mostly at my desk - but it just wouldn't fly in certain scenarios.  Hose is just a part of professionalism - kind of like wearing a tie - it has no purpose other than esthetics.  So yeah hose suck, but it's a part of the business world and they're not going away.  I just get ones that are as sheer and close to my skintone as possible

Oh - I hope no one is feeling offended by this thread.  Honey is right, style is very subjective.  I also think all the girls on this board have great taste and style.  However, I do think is it fun to hear what others won't wear.  The thing that makes us all have interesting from a style perspective is that we are willing to break the rules (or bend them to suite are needs).

I pride myself on wearing things that can be thought of as ugly. Really, it's like a game to me to see what I can pull off. I always get compliments and people always say "omg-that's looks so good on you, I could never wear that." But in reality, anyone could look good, it's just that they don't try mixing things up. That being said, I think there are people out there that look good in just about anything listed.

I will wear a lot of things and I didn't answer this before because I couldn't really think of a lot of things I wouldn't wear, but I did think of a few:

-90% of florals.  I'm really picky about these.  Like kiwi (I think?) said I always feel like I am wearing wallpaper.

-flippy/pleated mini skirts

-light denim jeans.  I don't know why I just feel like they don't look good on me.

-white shoes

-any clothes that scream "teenager"...even though I am one, I hate looking like an extra from Mean Girls.

-popped collars...way too many people do this at my school

That being said, I respect people who can pull off things I think of as less stylish.  I think there's always a loophole, you know?

I do a lot of the things you don't...like I'm tall so I only wear kitten heels or flat.  I hate my thighs so I love burmudas bc they hide my cellulite.  I love cowboy hats on the beach.  Tubes and halters are perfect for clubbin when its 100 degrees in there.  But I have my NOOOOOOs.

-Straight leg jeans, high waisted jeans

-Jeans tucked in my boots....I HATE THAT.  I'm like your in Kentucky not Alaska LOL

-Personally I think LV bags are ugly

-Anything overpriced...not big into labels.

-Huge hoop earrings

-Long peasant skirts

Im sure theres more I just can't think LOL.

Fortunately, not one place that I have ever interviewed at requires hose (with one exception).  In fact, most of the places I've seen are way casual.  Hopefully, wherever I land a job will be the same way (at least on a day to day basis).

I agree with some of the other posts that it is not the name brand but how you wear it. Just about anyone can look great everyday if they had an endless supply of cash to buy everything designer, but you have to be more creative to put together an outfit that looks great for less. I have clothes from Forever 21 that look just as cute if not better than clothes I have bought from Saks or Nordstrom. You just have to check the fit and the make of each piece. You can pay $100 for a top that is made crappier than something for $20. More expensive names do not always bring a better quality product. Trust me I am an equal opportunity shopper. I can find something anywhere. That makes shopping more fun and interesting.

I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but here goes.

  • I do avoid Forever 21 but not because the clothes feel icky and cheap, but because I always seem to be really reckless with my purchases when I shop there because I think "oh it's so cheap and it won't matter if I ever wear it again". All that recklessness combined with the single worst return policy ever cause me to be out of so much money that could've gone to things I truly love and have thought for ages about.

  • Express. I HATE the return policy. I don't like the clothes enough to get over the return policy. Like I have this idiot mental blocking against the lovely top CarrieS found because I refuse to deal with the return policy...

  • Shoes that tie up the leg...my calves are too large and I'm too short to be trying to cut off my legs. I do have a pair of C Label wedges that are supposed to tie up the leg, but since I tie them around the ankles, it's all good.

  • Midcalf length skirts: those damned musclar calves again.

  • Tube tops: I have 34Ds...they don't like to stay in tube tops.

  • Empire Waist anything: I have a small waist...I'm not going to hide it underneath swaths of fabric.

  • Berumdas: I'm too short and curvy for them, but they do look cute on my way taller and not so...uhhh...well endowed in the rear friends.

that's all because i'll try anything once!

Most of the stuff I avoid like the plague has already been listed, but here goes:

  • High waisted/tapered pants.  They remind me too much of my clothes from high school. *shudder*  That's one trend I don't think I can bring myself to participate in.

  • Bermuda shorts:  I'm too short to pull them off.

  • Most flats: too short for those, too.

  • Sweaters with "holiday" designs on them (snowflakes, Santa, pumpkins, etc.)

  • Any pants with wording across the butt.

  • Skirt or dress over pants, this just looks strange to me.

  • Orange, it looks so bad on me!

  • Jeans with holes in them.  This can look good, but I just can't bring myself to pay for something that has holes in it.

  • Hair pulled back/up with a ribbon.  This looks so cute on some girls, but I just can't pull it off.

I just don't wear things that aren't flattering on me or that I feel uncomfortable in...inclusing:

  • baggy clothes (same problem of being bigger on top- makes me look HUGE)

  • strapless tops (I wish I could because some are so cute, but they make my shoulders look about a mile wide)

  • on the same note, anything with shoulder pads (I look like a linebacker)

  • bermudas (so unflattering on me, I am way too short and they make my legs look stumpy)

  • chunky shoes... my grandfather made a comment to me about looking like frankenstein once and I can't get over it.

  • most things by celebtrity designers, even if I like them. something about it just bugs me.

I'm amazed that people would be offended by this...almost sorry I posted it at all. The only post I found somewhat offensive is Cortney's (no surprise) because she tends to generalize her opinions to everyone ("heels are slutty", "birkenstocks are lesbian") instead of explaining why she doesn't like them for herself.

I posted the why's of what I don't wear for clarification only. I personally don't care if everyone else wears overalls (just as an example) - I won't be offended by that. If they work for you, great! I don't wear what doesn't work on my body, or what personally I can't feel comfortable supporting (like the Steve Madden shoes)...but those are my choices to make, and no one else's.

I hope we can all just have enjoy this and not have people be offended by it. This is a fun, bright, fashionable group of ladies, and I want us to enjoy the threads posted here, not be bothered by what someone else chooses not to wear...or why they don't wear it.

Even if certain posts are generalizations, I really think this is all in good fun.  People can rock all kinds of things that I would never wear, and I don't think that this post should offend anyone!  While I understand sensitivity, we shouldn't walk around on eggshells just because we're scared somebody might like what we don't!  Fashion is about choice, and I respect everybody's personal style.

now i feel worse. honestly i just wanted to delete my entire post as though it had never existed.  but that's not an option, and since i knew there would be a remnant i just thought it'd be best to leave some sort of explanation.

i don't think anything that anyone posted was offensive, but i'm the type of person who always errs on the side of caution (to a fault as is evident). i edited mine b/c after i posted it i noticed i had specifically mentioned things that other people had just purchased and/or worn in the past few days, and i just didn't want to make anyone second guess their personal style.

Okay, I'll bite.  I must admit I have ALOT of things that fall into the 'no' category for me for one reason and one reason only:  I'm too short to pull them off!

  • Extreme low-rise pants - Can we say butt clevage?

  • Anything with an empire waist - Because I don't like being asked how far along I am when I'm not pregnant.

  • Long tanks/shirts - I already have a long waist and short legs, and wearing these just emphasize it that much more.

  • Chunky shoes - I agree with everyone else - I just don't find them flattering because them make me look thick everywhere else.

  • Full skirts - Every last one of them just swallows me right up!

  • Anything oversized - See 'full skirts'

  • Mules - Just simply cannot walk in them.

  • Heels higher than 4 inches - My feet are small so any heel higher than that is like suicide!  I would have to take such small steps I'd probably be ditched by whomever I was with!

  • Turtlenecks - Or anything with a high neck really.  I find it really accentuates my long waist.

  • Skinny Jeans - Have never met a pair I could pull over my thighs!

I think that's it.  Oh, and I didn't put them on my list but of course I won't wear tapered pants, shoulder pads, spandex, etc.

I have just a FEW things I won't wear:

  • Dress over pants, it looks GOOD on Trinny & Susannah from BBC's What Not To Wear, just not quite sure it would LOOK right on me (LOL)
  • Uggs (never could get into those) LOL
  • Shirts or T-shirts w/sayings on them, even THOUGH, since I had my 8-yr. old niece this past weekend, she asked me to wear my PRINCESS shirt like her, so OK.
  • Halter dress (I don't think I have the boobs for it)
  • Flip flops or thong shoes, I don't like anything between my toes
  • Overall pants, EVEN THOUGH I have this one cute denim shorts overalls that my honey just LOVES everytime I wear it, w/a cute shirt under, so....... Oh well, everyone is different, and that's what makes the World go 'round......LOL

Oh, I'm not offended by anyone's post except the 'heels are slutty' and 'birkenstocks are lesbian.' I think that's a little harsh.

I find it interesting, too, to see what people will and won't wear (and usually it's based on body type).  Sometimes the differences can even be defined by where a person lives or works.  But that's fine. That's what makes this forum interesting. If everyone dressed like me, then I wouldn't be unique, right?

atlgirl, don't worry, it's not the topic that offended. It's hasty generalizations.

honey, I'm sorry that you are feeling bad, but I honestly don't think there's any reason to. I didn't read your initial post, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been offensive. Like I said, I wouldn't care if you said you never wore teal (again, just as an example), and I'd just bought a bunch of it over the weekend. So what? You would never wear it. I would. How could that possibly make me feel bad? If I'd just bought the newest Bulga and someone said, "I would never carry a Bulga; I think they're ugly" I still wouldn't be offended. It's all subjective.

Honestly - IMO - if someone is going to return something (or stop wearing something) just because one of us says they'd never wear it, then I think that's pretty sad. To me, that's like not wearing something just because Vogue says it's "out". I wear what I like, when I like it, and don't get upset by what someone else thinks about it. *s*
