I thought it might be interesting to see what is an absolute "no" for some of us. Here's my list:
- bermudas (or any shorts, really). I think skirts are much cuter and I feel more feminine in them
- empire waists - they never look right on me
- anything too trendy - I like more timeless stuff. I don't mind if a color I like is trendy though; I can stock up on it and I'll still wear it when fashion has moved on to the next "in" color
- Steve Madden. This is a personal choice - though I like some of the shoes a lot. But I think the magazine ads are horrible and promote an anorexic, unrealistic look. So I won't put my dollars toward their products.
- baggy clothes. I might sit around in sweats or something loose at home all day (I work from home), but for me, anything that is meant to be worn out of the house has to be at least a little form-fitting. My husband thinks I'm obsessed with this, but I'm bigger on top than on the bottom, so if a top only fits me on top and doesn't shape to my curves a bit, I just look like a bigger woman, which is *not* my favorite way to present myself. :P
- too-short skirts. I used to wear them shorter, but I'm 37 now and for me, at least, it's not appropriate - my legs are still good, but I find I'm more comfortable in a little longer (usu. to the knee or just above) skirt.
- menswear. I do like a menswearish trouser, but overall I like feminine items.
- *most* halters or tube tops. I'm a 36C and unless it's a really supportive top (and they are few/far between), I won't wear it because I think the girls look better with some support. I can't believe how many women I see out there whose breasts just look AWFUL in these things, because they need more support. Doesn't anyone ever check the side view before leaving the house?!
I'm sure there are more, but these are what comes to mind right now. I might sound a little rigid, but knowing what *doesn't* work for me, as well as what does, makes shopping decisions much easier.
ETA:
OMG Lisa you sound *just* like me. You described my problems with shirts (the extra hanging inches of fabric) perfectly. I don't mind having curves, but I get annoyed when it seems like EVERYTHING has to be altered. And my hubby, who supports most of my whims, doesn't get this at all.
I knew I'd forget some obvious stuff - like tapered pants - I pretty much only wear flares or boot cuts in any pants. And turtlenecks - I don't do 'em at all, because I have a short neck and it just doesn't look good at all when my neck disappears under all that fabric. Also overalls, fanny packs, or trucker hats...any style of cap, really. I wear caps when I exercise, because that's the easiest way to keep my hair off my face, but otherwise...I could rock a cowboy hat at the beach, but "in town" no hats for me.

I agree with the tapered leg pant. I do not need anything to make my thighs look any bigger than they already do!! I don't care if they are back "in' this season, i will not be following that trend.
Oooh, fun question! Like you, atlgirl, I know what my absolute "no's" are. And some are similar to yours. I'll start with them:
1. Loose clothes. I have very few "flowing" items, and for the same reason. I am bigger on top than on the bottom, and having things that fit my chest and "skim" the rest of the way makes me look bigger. The same is true for most empire waisted items.
2. "Exotic" animal skins, fur, leather coats or pants, any other animal skin that can be avoided. I am somewhat of a hypocrite, b/c I will buy leather shoes regularly, and leather handbags occasionally, but it's something I try to avoid as much as possible.
3. High-waisted pants. Though it may seem counterintuitive, I find high-waisted pants emphasize my tummy, which is not a good look for me. I'm definitely not a girl who has a little roll coming out above her ultralowrise pants, but I do prefer a lower waist.
4. Pants with tapered legs or stovepipe pants. No matter what Vogue tells me about "skinny" pants coming back, I will never sucumb. (Again) I have enough visions of me wearing leggings and baggy shirts ala Madonna (in my defense, I was in like 7th grade) that I don't need to go there again. Big boobs + skinny legs * skinny pants / baggy shirt = disaster.
5. Button-up shirts/oxfords/"western" shirts/etc. I'm not opposed to these, but never find them flattering on me. I think this relates to number 1. If I purchase them fitted enough that they hug, somewhat, my lower body/rib cage/tummy area, the buttons gap on my chest. If I purchase them to fit my chest, I have a good six inches of excess fabric hanging down the front and looking weird.
6. Mid-calf length skirts. Why were these invented? To me, they are the epitome of frumpy on everyone except, like, Heidi Klum.
Which brings me to ...
7. Anything frumpy. "I fear the frump" is my fashion catch-phrase. For me, this includes anything from: Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, the Limited, Chico, J. Jill, J. Crew, etc. Plus about half the stuff from the Gap and Banana. If I can picture it featured in an ad for young professional women going to work from 9 - 5, I won't wear it. Now, this is not b/c these things are bad or because I think people who wear these clothes aren't stylish. It is just b/c they make me feel frumpy and like my life is boring. Please don't anyone take offense - this is just my big thing.
8. Cowboy hats. I live in Colorado. When I was a kid, lots of my friends did 4 - H and Future Farmer's of America. And I didn't get it. So now, if ever I try on a cowboy hat (or cowboy boots for that matter) I feel like a poser. Cause I still don't get it.
9. Anything from Wal-Mart. I'm sorry, but I think they are Satan. Seriously. I could go on about this for days. But that's another thread.
Ok. I think that's it.
ETA: OMG! Fanny packs, cartoon character shirts, overalls, etc. can all be added to my list, too!

1. Anything without a bra, or clear bra straps: I think protruding transparent shiny straps are tackier then protruding hot pink straps.
2. Midriff tops.
3. Shoes especially wedges with ribbons or cords that tie all the way up the calf: I guess it looks good on some people, but it makes me look like a stripper.
4. Tiny quilted bags: They just aren't my style.
5. Nude pantyhose: Just don't like them.
6. Blue eyeshadow: Looks horrible on me.
7. Most animal print: I like it on other people but not on me.
8. I don't mind cowboy hats, but I can't think up any suitable places to wear them, so no cowboy hats for me.

"...If I know my supermodels (and according to the half-dozen or so draped across my bed in a jenga of crack-glazed longing, I certainly do)"
* Tops with an empire waist - I think they make me (and a lot of other people) look pregnant. Some of the girls here wear them nicely, but they just don't look good on me.
* Anything with an even slightly poofy sleeve makes me look like a linebacker
* Jeans with wiskering at the top of the thighs and skinny jeans - I don't want to draw attention to the widest part of my body
* Anything from the GAP/Old Navy/BR trifecta, Walmart, Forever 21, and a few others I can't think of right now. I'm really selective about which corporation I like my money going to. I'm a total hypocrit because some of the places I do shop are probably just as bad.
* Anything Louis Vuitton. In general I don't like logos, but I really hate Louis Vuitton.
* Panty hose. Tights are okay, but no hose.
* Shorts of any length.
* Anything w/ a cute phrase on it. I actually think those are really cute, but at 30 I think I'm too old for that kind of cute.
*Red-with my red hair, I don't think so. Plus it makes me feel like I work at Target.
*Sheer tees- Underwear does not need to show through.
*Animal print- eewww. I just imagine a big woman wearing a huge leapord print blouse!
*Stileto heels- a little slutty, plus bad for your feet.
*Midfriff tops- again, slutty and looks cheap.
*Baggy clothes- I can't even wear this at home.
*Birkenstocks- Lesbo granola lady. I only had a pair when I was in 5th grade (1993), they were the thing to have. And I remember in high school there was this overweight substitute teacher, she only ever wore birkenstocks and she had dry purply feet with gnarly toe fungus!
*Fanny packs- Okay I had one when I was in 3rd grade I think, it was in florescent colors, everybody had one.
*Dooney "it" bags, LV bags- Yuck.
*Cartoon character items- especially Pooh, Mickey Mouse...
*Shirts with sayings- I find this annoying.
*Destructed Denim- I don't understand this. It's really big this year but I think I will pass on jeans that have holes and other crap on them.
eta: so i've edited this post a couple of times and then ended up deleting it. i'm a weirdo, but i just kind of felt bad listing all these things, since style is so subjective and a lot of things i personally wouldn't wear might be staples in other people's closet. sorry to be such a killjoy, i just didn't want to offend anyone.
1. spaghetti strap tops (I will wear them but only with a cardigan over them)
2. high waisted pants
3. tapered pants
4. fur (fake or real)
5. middriff tops
6. t-shirts with sayings
7. nothing overtly trendy -- now I am liking the boho thing, but you won't catch me in an entire boho outfit. It will only be one boho item
8. baggy teacher clothing (even though I am a teacher)
9. most flat shoes (I am a high heel woman--although I am loving those quilted flats at payless--I really like the quilted Marc Jacobs flats but they are out of my price range)
10. jumpers (think teacher clothing)
11. skirts below my knee (well, they have to be higher than mid calf)
12. floral button up shirts (they make me feel too country)
13. overalls
14. pleated pants (I don't care if they are back in style)
15. destroyed denim
16. fake logo bags (I don't mind knockoffs--just nothing that obvious)
17. navy slacks (I have no idea why, but they are repulsive to me)
18. Christmas sweaters (never again--I did wear one last year, but you girls here at stylethread have reformed me)
19. those purses alot of women are carrying that they make and then embroider their initials on them
I think that is it.
I thought of a couple of more after reading some more lists
20. vera bradley bags
21. white shoes of any kind
I hope no one is offended by this. I think it is fun. I may not wear floral buttonups, but I know some of you girls do and those who I have seen in them look fantastic. I just don't think I look fantastic in them. Also I listed destroyed jeans because I think they are a little too young for me and not really my style, but I love the ones FP listed in the weekend shopping thread. I love this thread because it allows you to get to know each other better stylistically.
-jeans/pants that flare too much and are too low... i hate pulling them back up
-and jeans/pants that have been overly faded in the butt area... why?!
-tops with more than 5% spandex (they cliiiing like crazy)
-unlike everyone, high heels, but that might change in the future when i actually have some i like
-fur, animal prints, grommets, crystals/rhinestones (eek), and leather (besides shoes/belts/bags)
-florals, bc i'm paranoid and i think i'm wearing wallpaper
-tight and thick wool sweaters (abercrombie had a bunch a few winters ago, and they just made everyone look much chunkier than they actually were! that was something i did NOT understand)
-dresses over pants. some people can pull it off pretty well, but i can't/won't do it
I agree with Honey- as soon as something becomes trendy, there is no joy in wearing it for me, even though I keep up to date with trends and try to dress stylishly
horsehair shoes or bags
jeans with weird fakeo bleach lines/distressing
I try to avoid the "frump" stores too except for occasional pieces. I would never be wearing a skirt from Ann Taylor and a top from Chicos for example
heels over 3" tall
Louis Vuitton bags/ Marc Jacobs bags
Vera Bradley bags
popped collars
polos only in moderation
clunky shoes
trying to avoid cheapie acrylic sweaters this year- haven't bought them for a while and I"m slowly trashing my old ones now- even if they're cute i like natural fibers
looks that are too 80's- any other decade I will do!
