help me find a watch for my fortieth birthday!!!
Permalink Closed

Hi all:

my husband wants to get me a nice watch for my fortieth birthday.  i have no idea how much to spend but i am to pick it out.  i'm thinking since it's my fortieth i should ask for something nicer than what i would normally buy for myself.  i already have a tag and an invicta so i don't want that brand.  i know that i want a chain link watch either all silver or silver and rose gold.  i've narrowed it down to about 12 watches and will post most here.  some are just menswear inspired chunky boyfriend watches in the $200 range - i am leaning against these though b/c i can buy these myself later and b/c this is the type of watch i'd like to have engraved.  thinking of going with something a little more special.  i REALLY need help picking them out so pls post your opinions.  here they are (posting the higher priced ones first):

1.  i'd love to have a cartier tank watch but feel guilty spending $3K right now.  i found this on amazon.  it's a tank watch for only 2K.  not sure why it's so cheap and if it's the size i may skip it, but here it is:

Cartier Women's CRTW5200013 Tank Solo Small Watch
it's the last one.

2.  this burberry at $495 - sorry the pic won't post

3.  this bulova at $831

96R138 Bulova Women's Stainless Steel Diamond Accent Watch

4.  this bulova at $513 - i like that it's two tone and the gold tone is actually rose gold vs. yellow gold:

Bulova Women's 'Diamonds' Stainless And Rose Goldplated Quartz Watch
5.  this fendi at $1250, similar to the above but more modern:

http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod75002204&eItemId=prod75002204&cmCat=search&searchType=MAIN&parentId=&icid=&rte=%252Fsearch.jhtml%253FN%253D0%2526Ntt%253Dfendi%252520round%252520chronograph%252520watch

that's it for the higher end - for the lower end ones i've been looking at:

1.  this coach boyfriend bracelet watch at $300:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3098995?origin=shoppingbag

2.  this kors at $225:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3126723?origin=shoppingbag

3.  this kors boyfriend at $225:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3128454?origin=shoppingbag

PLEASE PLEASE help as I am not a watch person and I have noone else to ask!!  Thanks!!

I'm sure you probably have thought about a Michele watch, but I love mine. I have this one. It's a really great looking watch and it feels good and substantial on.

Or there's this one which is also gorgeous.

Tough decision but an exciting one!!

Thanks!  I like those as well, and yes, I've heard of Michelle watches.  Do you like any of the ones I posted though?  Any opinions good or bad would be helpful, and I'll add those watches to the list.  There are so many out there, it's hard to choose!

After thinking about it some more, I really would like this to be an heirloom piece, hence the Cartier, Burberry, and Fendi, etc.  I want my husband to get it engraved so that I have another piece to pass down to my daughter.  i think I want a brand that's been around awhile.

I want something fashionable but timeless.  So please let me know what your vote is!!  I really need opinions!  Thanks!

They are all pretty, but if you want something timeless I say Cartier.

I like the square faces much more than the round - the round ones all seem sportier. I wouldn't say no to any of your choices.

I'd go for a Cartier, but I would ONLY buy from an authorized dealer... not amazon.

I am a watch person, although my budget doesn't agree with that:)))) My friend has this cartie - beautiful, but very "corporate", although "classic forever".  I own Michael Kors in rose gold, mine was a limited edition, round, pearl dial, beautiful!

My personal choices from your list: Burberry & Michael Kors with square dial! Cool with enough sparkle & timeless!!! Happy upcoming 40th!!!!

( In fact i was looking for this style in square, MK used to have all round watches, I needed in silver color in that same style & wanted square, so thanx for the info, as well!)

Thanks, everyone!  All of these replies helped me go with my decision - which is probably going to be the Cartier.  I am going to try it on today and then go from there . . .

Oh adn I found another dealer with a better price than Amazon.  Thanks again!  I may also get one of the Kors watches for every day b/c my husband thinks if I get the Cartier I shouldn't wear it everyday - just wear it out and when I'm dressed up.  And then get another one for day to day - b/c I am brutal on my watches, but I don't know.  Any thoughts on that?

I LOVE the Cartier and Burberry especially if you want something timeless but as the other said they are all really lovely. I do prefer the square face for this choice. Enjoy!

Go for the Cartier -- you only turn 40 once!

The Cartier one is gorgeous. I really like the thought of passing this watch down to your daughter some day. My father has a watch from his uncle (the man he was named for) and it's well known in the family that when my father passes, I will inherit the watch. It's just a regular gold watch that my great uncle received for his retirement as a bread deliveryman, but the memories and the meaning behind the watch is what makes it so special to my dad and to me. Your daughter will appreciate it when she's older.

Thanks, everyone!  Boots - that is lovely that you will inherit your grandfather's watch.  I love family heirlooms and now that I have kids they are so important to me.

Okay, so I have one more minor question.  I've already made my decision but want to run it by you all to see if you'd do the same.  I have a choice of 2 Cartier watches.  Both are the same price, but one is slightly bigger than the other.  My inclination has been to get the bigger one b/c I like a more chunky/substantial piece.  however, this is a Cartier and not really about chunky.  Anyway, I called the store for another reason and did a little more research and after I decided to go with the bigger one, found out that it is actually a men's watch.  The guy on the phone (from the store) said that tons of women buy that very watch adn that it doesn't really matter (in his opinion).  it is his best selling watch.

I don't think it does either - what does everyone else think?  Here are the two watches.  The name is the "Tank Solo" and it comes in large (mens) and small (ladies).  the diameter of the face (case) for the small is 31 mm, which is a decent size (I wouldn't go smaller though) and the large is 35 mm (a nice size).

Here they are:

the large:

Cartier Tank Solo Quartz Large W5200014

and small:

the small is the same one i posted above.  a minor difference as you can see.  so my question is - do you agree with my decision to get the big (technically men's) watch or should i change my mind and go with the smaller one?  btw, my wrists are tiny and i'm a relatively small person, but i hope that doesn't matter as i am leaning towards the bigger one.  thanks!

In general, I don't think it matters. However, I would go with the smaller one for a few reasons. First, your husband is seeing it as a "dressy" watch, and I don't equate chunky with dressy. Also, since it's a classic piece, I'd go with the smaller because chunky watches are kind of 'in' right now, and that doesn't read classic to me. Lastly, since you are considering it as an heirloom piece, I'd go the more traditional route so that your daughter will be more likely to wear it.

I ditto greendiamond. As much as I love the look of men's watches, they are more for casual wear for me. If you go with the ladies version, you'll be able to wear more easily from casual to formal.

Your not talking a large difference in size. I'm not sure if it really matters in this case. If you were deciding between a men's watch vs. a dainty ladies watch, then I could see going with the smaller one. As it's only a small size difference, I'd probably go with my gut and get the larger watch. It's what you seem to want and a few mm here or there isn't going to make a difference to your daughter when she inherits it. The fact that it came from you is what will matter.

hi!
As I posted before, my friend, actually two, own Cartier watches, one of them has exactly same style as you're planning on, in small size. To my personally it's not a big statement at all, unless you look closer & see that it's Cartier. But elegant classy piece. So, I suggest, that if you have an opportunity to try on both watches somewhere & be sure which size looks better on you. If you don't have Cartier store nearby, then try something else, similar size ( In Macys - ESQ has similar style in both sizes).
