Picking out a house...UPDATE
Permalink Closed

Finding a new place has come so suddenly, but me and my man have narrowed it down to these two homes.  They are both close to his working area and have acreage so he can have his shop and park his heavy equipment.  He is siding towards the country style home, I am loving the contemporary style home.   Yes, he likes the contemporary one, but thinks by looking at the picture that the yard hasn't been tended to very well, and thinks something is wrong with it since it's vacant.  One reason I don't like the country one, besides that the furniture I wan't to put in it would look silly in there is that the place is on a steep hill.  Scary in the winter time.   Plus the driveway is gravel so he would have to get it paved.  Any ideas on how to persuade him?  Here is the links:

My favorite contemporary:

Hmm, that is a tough one, especially since I don't like the interior decor of either house!  I like the outside of the contemporary one, but I agree that it looks like a beautiful house placed on sort of a crappy lump of land.  The country one looks homey and more tended to.  If you think your furniture would look stupid in the country one- maybe you should keep looking.  Have you been inside both homes?  Maybe you can find a more country style home that isn't *quite* as country so that your furniture would look ok inside?  I am personally a HUGE sucker for tudor style maisons and cottage looking places, and might feel odd in either of those two homes, so you two may have to keep looking if neither of you likes the home the other picked.

Haven't seen the inside yet.  We are suppose to do a driveby this Sunday with the realtor lady, then she will make an appointment for a showing.  And we have a friend who is a house inspector who will go over them with a fine tooth comb!  I'm hoping the one I like turns out to be the best, I don't know how else to persuade that it is!

I'm with Kel on this one. Outside of country house but the inside of the comtemporary one.

I think form the pics the one you like better is more spacious and more for your money, and that bathroom!!!!

I do think the country one needs a severe kitchen and dining room make over. But the upstairs bedroom and veiw are killer.

What really did it for me is the kitchen dining and living rooms look like they would be difficult to make your style without quite a bit of work(Country house), where as the other house may not have the same charm it looks easier to addapt to your styles.

If a remodel is an option I would think more seriously about the country house. The hill thing is scary though. Do you have the mudslide problem there that we have in some areas of California? If so stay on flat land!!

They are both beautiful I'm soo jealous. I can barely find a ratty condo for that price here and It is so beautiful there.

Today I looked at both houses.  The country one is out of the question.  It has a long dirt road, not even gravel!  Inside is cheaply done.  Cheap ass linolium.  The kitchen counters and cabinets are patheticly cheap quality.  The rooms are so tiny.  Plus they obviously don't spray for spiders considering there was 5 huge ones outside next to the house.  Will have nightmares tonight!  Plus it's much further out of town than I want, and with gas prices as high as they are....

The contemporary one is fabulous with a few drawbacks.

The bad: This is obviously a divorce selling.  The lady still lives there, and she does not keep the place up!  Outside the yard needs a lot of work.  There was the biggest wasp nest I have ever seen hanging off the roof!  The exterior needs pressure washed badly and there is this awful metal gate around the utility room entrance that needs removed.  Plus ugly huge bushes against this area of the house.  Walls need painted, they are dirty as well.  The carpet is nice but needs professionaly cleaned it is DIRTY!   And I can see why they didn't include a photo of the kitchen!  They used cheap counters and cabinets, they are an awful white laminate!  Cheap appliances too.  And OMG, when I opened the door to the garage I just about gagged!  There is crap all over in there and it smelled like rotting garbage and cat crap and urine!  Back deck needs to be extended, plus the wood needs some TLC.

The good: I could not have put together a better floorplan myself!  Foyer is great and makes a statement.  Off the hallway from the foyer is three seperate closets (a little weird?) Gas fireplace in the family room.  Kitchen is good sized with an island with stovetop.  The master bedroom is so fabulous.  It has this sitting/exercise room plus the biggest walk in closet I have ever seen!  The bathroom is the biggest I have ever seen too, and that tub is great!  This property is in a good location with a fabulous view.  Nice neighborhood.

We put an offer $20k below asking to start.  This home has been on the market since May.  This morning there was an open house for agents, and we were told only 1 showed up!  Considering the place needs work and there hasn't been any other offers or interest in the place, were hoping our offer will get accepted.  We will know next week!
