I'm getting a family picture taken in a few weeks and my mom's paying for an outfit, so now I need to pick one out. I want to wear jeans so I can get a new pair out of it.
I was thinking Citizens Fayes in North Pacific...
I really like these shoes so I was thinking of wearing them so I could get them on mom...
As for jewelery I was thinking something along these lines, I have a lot of stuff that is similar...
I'm open to suggestions on anything, but I really need a top. I don't know what I'm looking for, but I haven't really been able to find anything I like. It needs to be reasonably priced and preferably something I could wear this fall. Anyone seen anything?
Let's start with a basic idea of your favorite and most flattering colors. After all, if you are going to be memorialized on film...you want to look your BEST!
For professional photos, I usually stick to classic pieces. I think that jewelry is too "trendy" for a photo that may be around for years (but I love that first necklace!). Even though years from now you may still wear either of those necklaces from time to time, it is going to totally date the picture. Also, family portraits are meant to showcase the individuals as a family, which will be hard to do if one person, or everyone, is wearing trendy, unique items. I think those jeans, and possibly shoes though they may date the portrait a bit too, will work well, but I would choose simple subdued jewelry and a simple top in a fit and color that flatter you.
Are they formal or more casual? Artsy or more traditional portrait style?
We had black and white artsy pictures taken a couple years ago. I wore all black... my favorite Max Studio top and Sisley pants capris. Not an outfit I would actually wear IRL but it photographed nicely. Our photographer told us to wear black, white, and/or denim and nothing too trendy. We didn't wear shoes and jewelry was minimal... I only wore pearl studs. It sounds like I'm describing an Amish portrait, but it turned out really nice.
I think the key is to strive for simple and timeless. You don't want to date yourself by being too trendy. I would also photograph yourself in what you plan on wearing before you do the real thing just to see if you like the look you're going for.
Our pictures are going to be in color, casual, and traditional. And it's just going to be me, my sister and our dog (I know that's so obnoxious, but we love him!!!).
So I totally get the trendy thing, but I've decided I kind of don't care. We get these taken like at least every two years so it's not like these are the only pictures we have and I think that by dressing like I usually do, it's commemorating the time. Also, the big jewelery I would wear is some stuff that's along those lines, but I bought it in India when I was there about a month ago so I'll probably wear it for a long time and when I look back the picture I'll be like, "Oh yeah, that was right after I got back from India."
