Cell Phone Service Providers - who do you use?
Permalink Closed

This should probably be in Tech or Polls but I thought I would get more hits here. Who does everyone use? How is the service? If you travel, how have you noticed your service in other places? Do you have family plan? How would you rate your provider overall?

I know it always seems like the grass is greener with another cell phone provider. My contract is ending soon, and I am thinking about switching.

I'm w/Sprint & haven't had any problems during my 8-year run w/them (started when it was still PrimeCo).

About 2.5 years ago, I locked into a great rate of $29.99/month for 300 anytime minutes & unlimited nights & weekends.  Then about a year & a half ago, I locked into my nights/weekends to start @ 7 pm for an additional $5.

I get nationwide coverage w/out any additional charges whenever I travel.  The only reception problems I have are on the outer islands where coverage is sketchy b/c of the remote locations I may be in.  My brother lives in on the big island & there's no reception @ all w/the phone b/c Sprint doesn't have towers that cover the area.

I haven't added anyone onto my plan, but assume that it wouldn't be a problem b/c of the length of time I've been w/them.  I found that each text message costs me $0.25 to read, which can add up every month.  Otherwise, I don't have any complaints.

Good luck!

COOL! I also have Sprint, and like you, kealoha, I only have problems when I read text messages (I didn't know they charge you! GRR!), and when I'm in an area w/TREES, I tend to lose the signal, but for the most part, they're OK in my book. When I travel to Louisiana, I get GREAT coverage, of course I have NADA in between those lil' country towns, but when I get to a small city, I have full signal strength! LOL My contract ends w/them THIS November, and I'm not sure if I want to stay w/them or not. They GOT ME good, back in '03, I have 350 anytime min., and unlimited night/weekend min. for $35.00. I rarely use all of those 300 min., and MOST of friends have Sprint also, so I get the free PCS to PCS calling, which is GOOD in my book. The only thing I DON'T like about them, also, is I'm looking to upgrade my phone, but they want me, a customer who's been w/them since '99 to pay the FULL PRICE, while new customers get the phones at the discounted/sale rate! How UNFAIR is that?!

I also have Sprint, and overall I'm happy w/them.  I've had them for quite some time - I have a plan that includes 500 anytime mins, unlimited nights and weekends - which start at 7pm, and I also have free text messaging and web access...I get an employee discount through work, so it's pretty cheap for me.  Reception has been pretty good too - I also have Nationwide long distance and everywhere I've been, my phone has worked great.

My only beef w/them is the same one TheLovelyLady mentioned - they make their longtime, existing customers pay full price if they want a new phone or anything fixed.  That really pisses me off - wouldn't a good way to keep customers to make phone upgrades discounted?  Ugh!

i'm w/ verizon & i LOVE them!  i started maybe 5 yrs ago or so & haven't really had any problems.  i was w/ cingular before that & not only did i have crappy service, but they overcharged me for months w/o me realizing it!  since i started w/ verizon so long ago, my nighttime minutes start at 8pm, but i think it's 9pm now for new plans.  i have a plan that allows me to talk w/o roaming in all the "western" states including hawaii!

i think i get 300 anytime minutes & unlimited (or very close) nighttime & weekend minutes.  i also get a new phone every two years.  my text messages are 0.20 to send & 0.10 to receive, but i don't text much so it doesn't usually affect my bill too greatly.  u can get unlimited texting for $5/month.

my reception is really good w/ verizon which is why i switched from cingular cuz i always had to use my cousin's phone cuz i didn't have reception & she had verizon.  i don't get very many dropped calls & i'm just very happy w/ verizon!

I have Sprint as well.  I have been with them for 5+ years.  I get $150 off any new phone after 18 months with my old phone.  You guys may want to check into that deal.  It is a standing offer they have had for quite some time.

I am overall pretty happy with my Sprint servive, however, as of late, i have been experiencing a lot of dropped calls in major metro areas.  I have called and complained and they say it is because i am in a car and moving fast blah blah blah, i have never had the issues before so what gives?  that is my only complaint.

I forgot about the free Sprint PCS to PCS calling & it appears I they don't exhaust from the 300 minutes.

I haven't upgraded my phone in the past 18 months & am looking to do so in January.  When I called in Jan 2004, the CSR actually told me to hit up Radio Shack b/c she knew they'd offer rebates better than Sprint stores.  She was honest w/me & I followed her advice & got a phone for a great deal.  So ladies, perhaps check out your local Radio Shack & see what they have to offer.

Really? How did you find out about that Bex?  I swear, last time I bought a new phone (and I had my previous one for longer than 18 mos ) I asked if I got any type of discount and they said no - that only new customers got deals on phones.  Do you know if there's any info on their website or anything?

I also have Sprint PCS and I love them.  Their CS has always been great.  I travel to a lot of remote areas for my job and I've always had good reception.  I think the only time I haven't gotten reception was in Hawaii.

Like Bex, I've also gotten a $150 rebate on a new phone after 18 months.  In fact, last month they changed their system to an "instant rebate" so you don't have to wait for the check.  My husband and I have both upgraded twice and never had to pay for a new phone.

I hate texting, but my sister said they switched her to unlimited free text messages when she agreed to renew her contract.

i have verizon and love it, but i think what makes it work for me is that 99% of the people i talk to have verizon so all of my phonecalls are IN. I don't have a landline so this is important for me.

also, i know that sprint is known to have random dead areas- like the street i lived off of in cleveland, no coverage, but my neighborhood had it- weird.

cingular is also supposed to be great and they have the razr!

I have Sprint too. The phone service is pretty good, except it doesn't work when I go home to VT (where there are Verizon towers only.) Also I have had a number of calls dropped lately....and I live in Boston!

I HATE their CS. Every single time I have called for one reason or another (and I am super-polite) they treat me like crap. Maybe I am unlucky and just keep getting grumpy operators.....I dunno.
