Anyone ever used one? Is is worth is? What is the approximate cost?
I just cannot fathom moving my own stuff again. I don't have health insurance and my back is really messed up and I don't want to hurt it more by moving my crap. I'm looking into moving companies, but I'd like to hear other's experiences. Thanks.
I used one the last time I moved and I swear I will never go back to doing it myself! It was so nice to actually have enough energy to unpack a little once I got to the new place. I just used a local company and I think it was about $800- they charged by the hour and we have tons of stuff so it took a while.
I've used moving companies the last two times I moved and I will never go back. I did all my packing/unpacking and just hired the movers to load the truck, drive to new place, and unload the truck into the new apartment. I think it is totally worth it. The movers were super quick and easy to work with.
I absolutely hate moving and I hate having to ask my friends for help. I liked that the movers got it all done in one easy trip and I didn't have to stress about it.
In my case, I was moving to another apartment in the same city and I paid about $300 both times. If you are moving a further distance the cost goes up considerably.
Make sure you do a lot of research on the company, I've heard that there are a lot of moving company related scams.
anyway after dealing with the move from hell, all i can say is pay that extra $20-50 an hour for the QUALITY guys. make sure the company has been in business at least 10 years+. ask for past clients info to see if you can call them for a reference.
don't cut corners with movers. it's so not worth it.
I used movers when I moved into my last apartment and it was totally worth it. It was expensive (maybe around $500 to move about 10 blocks) but I also live in Manhattan and used a major moving company so your costs will likely be lower. I had already packed most of my stuff but they wrapped up my furniture, tv, etc. I also paid for the optional insurance since I have a few valuable things and would have been crushed if anything happened to them.
Nyla - please research the company well. I had a moving disaster! I hired a company to move me from Boston to LA. It was a tragedy! The company promised my stuff in 5-7 days (my choice was 5-7 days or 1 month - I chose 5-7 days). I rushed my roadtrip across the country to meet my goods! (I had to forfeit my planned trip to the grand canyon for this company) And yes, I was without my stuff for a month. When I DID get my stuff I had the following problems:
1. The driver refused to unload my stuff unless I paid him an additional $500 in cash! I was devastated. I had just paid the company an a**load of money to get my stuff across the country and I had to pay $500 more?!?!? Not to mention I was feeling very broke after my pricey move. AND the ATM limit was $300 w/draw a day! It was a nightmare. I literally started crying on the curb. He started his engine and was about to drive away when I gave in - and gave him the money!
2. I had paid extra to have my furniture insured b/c I was shipping a cedar chest that was a family heirloom. Well, needless to say - the chest arrived with a HUGE water damaged spot! The company told me to get an estimate and they would cut me a check for the repair price. I got an estimate for $700.
I called the main office every day for ~3 months. I was told that the $500 cash demanded was b/c my furniture weighed more than they estimated. However, the contract that I signed was for square footage - not weight. So that was against my agreement. The main office promised to refund a portion of my $500 and pay for the chest repair. Well, literally 3 months after the moving incident, I received a check from the movers for.......$25.00!
I called the main office everyday for the next 3 months, filed a report for the BBB, and basically cried. I never did cash the $25 check. And I hate moving companies. Nothing ever happened - I just literally gave up.
Bottom line - please use someone that has a good reputation. It is worth it in the end to spend a little more $$ up front!!
oh my god tara you poor thing!! when i read that part about you you crying on the curb, i got so mad and sad at the same time! what was the moving company's name? at least we can make sure no fellow st'er gives them any business!
anyway, i moved from vegas to la and paid about $400 and watched the movers like a hawk the entire time and drove down to la the night they took my stuff and met them at my new apt the next morning and thankfully everything got unloaded ok. it was so stressful though, the entire night before i couldn't sleep, just kept hoping and praying all my stuff was ok!

They were called "In & Out Moving". So beware!! Oh, and they lost a box of my clothes! Thankfully I made mself squish all my nice clothes into the trunk of my civic b/c I didn't trust movers. Oh, and they left me an extra box of someone's baby clothes. When I called the office to let them know I had someone else's clothes, they simply said "keep them - we have no way of tracking the owners down"! It was horrible.
Oh, and when the truck pulled out of my driveway in Boston, the driver broke a branch off a neighbor's tree. My neighbor came outside yelling, and the driver punched him in the nose! The cops were called and everything! It was SO embarrassing!
Ok - I am done complaining about my experience! Anyway, Nyla - I hope you have better luck!!!

OMG!! What a horrible experience. I don't even know what to say about it. I'm completely shocked that a company could be so incompetent. I've heard all kinds of mover horror stories. I think Oprah even did a show about it. Moving scams where they load your stuff up, drive away and you never see them again.
A company called ATLAS VAN LINES packed, moved my things and shipped my car from Cincinnati to Connecticut. They were excellent I was not worried about cost, as my job was paying for it it was a little over $1,000.....BUT keep in mind they also shipped my car.
They packed everything in sight (they'll pack your full garbage can if you don't tell them not to) and loaded everything very carefully onto a 18-wheeler and then put my car behind it (my car was brand new, not even off the lot for 24 hours) they did not scratch or damage anything! They had it all packed by 2pm on a Friday.I got my flight that Sunday, was back in Connecticut by 11am and the truck was pulling up by 1pm.They even started to unpack but I wanted to just be in my apt. by myself, so it took me another 4 months to finally get unpacked!
Don't be confused by imitations! I saw on some moving scam sight a company with a like name.
I used Starving Student Movers and it was a little over $500. I was satisfied with everything and they even helped me pack most of my stuff. Keep in mind however, it was expensive, around $75/hr and I moved about 45 minutes away. I had a neighbor that also used them and was satisfied, typically you pay for what you get.
