problem w/ co-worker, long story
Permalink Closed

Okay, It all started with my DM calling me into the office to talk with me.  I thought it was about confirming my new start date at the store I'll be transfering to, but instead it turned out to be a bitch fest about my performance and what the other managers have been saying about me. She told me about how the other managers say that I'm not giving 100% to my job everyday and don't care about my job and there is a bit of friction between me and new manager and another part-time manager that has been on the job for less than a month. I told her, this is the first time someone has brought that to my attention, and that if a manager had a problem with my performance, they should have told me first, not bitched (I didn't say it that way) to her.  Plus I defended myself, and saying I work hard everyday, I stay over everyday, bust my butt in keeping things together and keeping associates motivated.  Granted, my numbers and the store's numbers are not that great, in fact, the other stores in the area are not doing well either. So it's not entirely my fault business is bad.

Also she told me that I have not been actively recruiting to find someone to replace me, which I think is not my entirely my job to do. Also she said, when she visits the store, I don't look like I have a sense of urgency to do my job.  Sorry I'm not a jolly, cheesy, loud person, I'm very chill when it comes to managing the sales floor and my associates do perform when I'm out there. All of this is coming from a woman who I have never seen out in the mall recruiting when she visits out store (DMs from other stores are always in our store recruting every day), who when she was a store manager, never actively worked on her sales floor, plus she is not officially the district manager, she is a district manager-in-training.

Also the managers she said I have friction with is because, both managers really doesn't know how to run the salesfloor, they let everything get out of control, when I'm out there, I try to help and teach them ways to keep people motivated and on task, but i guess they see that as me be being mean to them. I am infuriated! I have never had a problem in my 5 years in this company with other co-workers and my performance.  I'm afraid, knowing how my "DM" works , she may have told my new DM about these problems and make me look like a bad manager before I even get there. Plus I don't know how to confront the managers who have a problem with me, without being mean, but i'm really pissed off.

Sorry it's such a long story, but there is alot going on. I hope you guys can help me. I feel torn because I really like working for this company and have invested alot in this job.

Sounds like that woman is on a power-trip. Good luck!

Act completely normal when you transfer.. let your performance be the thing they judge, not what this woman says.. she clearly doesnt know what she is talking about!

Sheesh, is your DM's name Dana, b/c she sounds like my old DM!  I agree with Jocey, she's on a power trip, especially seeing as she is only a DM-in-training.

Maybe you could try to ask your co-workers if there is anything they think you should be doing differently b/c you've heard that they had some issues with your performance that weren't aware of previously.  I don't have much more advice for you. DM's are crazy people.

It sucks to feel attacked, and anyone would be upset. If it makes you feel better, though, there's no point in proving each of her points wrong. She'll just make up new ones. It's probably more helpful to focus on what is really going on here. What is in it for her to criticize you like this? What does this criticism take away from you? A good guess is that she's fostering a split between you and the other managers. Why do you think this is? What have you heard through the grapevine? If you're leaving soon, is the manager trying to make you feel terrible for taking a promotion? Is she settting you up to do poorly in your new assignment? Is she making sure she won't be blamed for you not wanting to work in her division anymore? (I don't know how this works, though) It could be a lot of things.

The only thing I can pretty much say for sure, is that the piddly, vague complaints she came up with had nothing to do with what's going on. I wouldn't waste time trying to defend them to her. It's a game. She says "You dont' do x, y and z..." You knock yourself out to prove that you actually DO xy and z, and by the time you've done that (which by putting you on the defensive, you're already looking bad even though she's totally pulling this out of her ass) she can just say, "Well, I'm glad you're trying to straighten up, we'll see how it goes, and by the way I have some more complaints..." It's a never-ending loop, and a game you lose as soon as you respond. So I wouldn't respond, at least not to her.

I would, however, use this as a chance to strengthen ties with the other managers and your staff. A sort of humble "Wow, the DM said this and that, and I had no idea... I thought my long hours spoke for themselves but I guess everyone puts in long hours... I would never want to let down such a great team, that's why I fought so hard to have casual Fridays (or whatever)..." Blah blah blah. Just make the assumption that you're doing things right, weave them into the conversation as givens, not as assertions, and poormouth yourself at the same time. If they were a little mad, they'll be so excited you caved they will love you. If, more likely, they never were mad, it'll register that the DM is a bitch and you are an angel.

Also, a chat with HR, something like "My DM has raised some concerns. Here's some documentation addressing them. I just wanted something in my file in case this comes up again..." can go a long way toward making you look like the person that's harder to mess with.

Good luck!

I think I am just going to keep working hard like I have always been doing for the past 5 years.  If my DM doesn't like it, screw her, I have 5 years of excellent annual reviews and a former DM who has transfered to another area in the North  and 2 former store managers that can vouch for me. Plus today I confronted the two managers who have problems with me and they apologized for not coming directly to me with their issues. So i'm half way there. Thanks for your responses, guys, I feel so much better.
