i need to hear a few outrageous stories from some of you to help me be truly "okay" with the amount of money i just spent.

earlier this week i was buying a fragrance for my husband. it was a slow night and the only girl around was behind the chanel counter and i asked her to ring me up. i then spontaneously told her that i really needed a whole new bagful of makeup and asked if it was something they could help me with. i was in luck of course because a national makeup artist was going to be later that week (today) and i could book an appointment with him. great.

so my appointment was today and my makeup looked fabulous. FAB-U-LOUS. it was natural and simple, but glowing and perfect. i bought one of everything that he used plus a few of the products that she prepped me with. total: $337.

now, i am not a makeup person. i wear it, but it's not something i normally spend a lot of time or money on but i needed new makeup and i really needed someone to put it all together for me. i usually buy an eyeshadow here, a lipcolor there, a mascara from the drugstore etc. so this was really a departure for me, but i feel so darn good about my purchases. (despite killing my total shopping budget for the month)

how much have you spent at one makeup counter? i know there has to be someone out there that has spent more than i just did!

I don't know that I have ever beat that amount, but I have certainly come close to that amount.  Every once in a while (maybe once a year or once every other year), I will feel like I need a major overhaul and I will buy all new products.  Then, as time goes by I will run out of things and not replace them or buy a new lipstick or eyeshadow color by itself.  After a while of this, the cycle starts all over and I will buy all new stuff all at once so it comes together again.

Oh how easy it is to spend money at the Chanel counter! I used to wear Chanel and it's pretty pricey. Anyways, I personally haven't spent that much on makeup at one time. Although one of my clients spent $900! I just don't know how people do that! So maybe your $300+ doesn't sound so bad. What mascara did you get? I'm totally in love with their Instant Lash.

easy indeed! i knew i'd spend at least $150 based on what i truly needed (blush, eyeshadow and lipcolor). but... oops!

i got the lash building mascara. what is instant lash all about?

I think that's their newest mascara, the one you got. Instant Lash lengthens and thickens and doesn't flake at all. It's not waterproof but stays on really well. I don't know, I just really like it a lot. I haven't tried the new one, but I've tried another one of theirs (it came in square tube...I don't know the name) and it was horrible, but they got this one right. I have a friend that is an artist for Chanel and she thinks Instant Lash is their best as well. Enjoy your new makeup!

The most I ever spent has been on Estee Lauder lipstick!  I have a great look using mostly drugstore makeup.  I'm going to have to figure what I'm going to do when my Agnes B. Apricot Complexion Enhancer runs out.

I think you should be really happy about your purchase since you love the make-up so much.  I spent about that much at the Chanel counter about 2 years ago and I still use the "routine" they taught me.  I've started using a few different products as the ones I bought from Chanel have run out and quite honestly I haven't been as happy with my make-up lately and I was recently thinking that it was time to "blow my shopping budget" for the month and make another trip to Chanel.  So, I think your $337 was well spent!

mine wasn't make-up, but right before i left college for chicago, i went to my favorite beauty store: www.beansbeauty.com  they're like a sephora, but more of a hair supply version of sephora (think way way upscale sally beauty supply).

i went in just for a new hair straightener and blow-dryer, well i decided since i loved this store and didn't know if chicago would have a go to place (ok, it's not like chicago is rual america, i don't know what i was thinking), also, i was uncertain if the parents would cut me off completely, i would be moving into a new apt. and have to pay for everything myself, etc...so i might as well stock up one last time on their bill (i know, spoiled and bratty!!!)

so the hair straightener and blow dryer turned into a foot scrub, razors, cuticle cutter, pedi scrub, cooling lotion, eye moisturizer (yonak is awesome), a couple DDF products, murad, a TON of hair styling products (TIGI, Bumble and Bumble, Keratase), shampoos, conditioners, nail polish, etc..

well when she told me the total ($700 + ) i seriously was in shock (how did it add up so quick???), i handed over my credit card, staring blankly...

so that was my biggest splurge.  the good news is that i haven't had to buy one ounce of product and it's been over a year, and i'm not close to having to replace anything except face wash type stuff.

I bet your parents had the same reaction when they got the bill!

my friend got married earlier this year, and she got a Chanel makeover a few weeks before. Her mom bought her the entire line of products (skincare & makeup) they used -- I think it was around $400-500 in all.

I think that even though it seems like a lot for one shot, if you add up all the high-end makeup purchases a lot of people make during the span of a year, it's probably pretty close to that amount. So if you got a look you're really happy with, and won't have to buy more makeup for several months to a year, I think it's certainly reasonable.

hmmm, i think the most i've ever spent at once was around $130 at the nars counter.  but halleybird is right, i'm sure if we all add up all the little things we pick up here and there, it would be about the same as your recent spree.  so don't feel guilty, enjoy your new makeup!  (ahhhh, i loooove new makeup )

Ah, don't feel too bad.  I bet you'll look gorgeous.

My worst makeup splurge was $98 at Clinique.  It doesn't sound too bad now.  However, at the time I was a broker than broke college student making minimum wage working 10 hours/week at the University's library.  That $98 was over two weeks pay.

they probably did, however, i called them and said not to send a rent check that month (i couldn't have them paying for foot scrub and hair products!!!).  sad, that i spent the equivalent of rent on products!

but in my defense, i figure that i probably would be replacing a $30 item a month and definitely pick up other "necessities" during that outing, so... let's say i add $20 to make it $50 a month x 12 months (it's actually been 14!) which makes it $600 a year (not to mention i bought things that won't need to be replaced for years...hair straightener, blow dryer, cuticle trimmers, etc...) so to keep me out of the stores, maybe it was worth it!!!  i become weak in the knees at sephora, ulta, and all those other beauty stores!

can we say major justification

I used to not be a makeup/skincare person and just walk out the door with my zitface all exposed for the world to see. I guess I didn't really care, but after I started to wear a little bit of makeup I experimented more and more. I wear it to work and when I go out now and since I work in an appearance-centric industry, I try to always have some good basics on hand.

I returned a pair of glasses and with that money bought $150 worth of products at the MAC counter at Nordies once. Yeah that was not smart...plus I ended up hating most of the products. I love their eye makeup colors though so I'd still go to them for that but they did the single worst attempt at matching my skin color in history. I spent a good six months going orange every time I put on makeup.

I did fork over $106 at the Armani counter a few months back on TWO products!!!! Granted I love the Matte Silk Foundation and the Silk Powder too but I had to literally had to turn away at least $200 more worth of makeup because I really loved the way their makeup made me look but that's too much out of my paycheck going to makeup....I just can't do it

I forgot who it was that posted this a while back, but they said you should think about how much you spend on clothes versus spending money on something that the world sees you with every single day (i.e., your face/skin).  Since then, I have treated myself to much nicer skincare and make-up products for my face, and I have seen the difference in both my skin (more even and less prone to breakouts) and my make-up looks like what I want it to look like.

Also, my mother swears by Chanel skincare and make-up products, has done so for at least the past 15 years, and she looks AMAZING for her age.

okay, it's been 3 full days since my purchase and i'm not feeling bad in the least bit. i totally agree that treating yourself to a skincare/cosmetics makeover is well worth the investment in terms of how you present yourself each day. (i don't necessarily think you have to blow your whole shopping budget on it either... although i certainly did and now i'll have to wait for that sweater i've been dying to get.) it's not even the products i walked away with that left me feeling so good, it was the amazing customer service and the knowledge + tips the girls and the makeup artist shared with me that i wouldn't have otherwise known that made it such a fabulous experience... a few slight little tweaks and a couple new products and i feel my skin glowing brighter already.

i hope to look as amazing as your mom does in 15 years!

The same goes for new haircuts!  I always forget how important it is to feel good about your hair until I get a good haircut.

I used to be a Mary Kay person & this was our closing basically - that you should think about the outfit that makes you feel absolutely great when you wear it - how much was it (at least $300 I dare to guess)? Add the purse, shoes, accessories, etc. If you run into a friend you haven't seen in 10 years, what do you think they will remember - what you had on or how you look??? As in how is your skin, etc. It's entirely true & I will remember it forever. So I don't feel really bad spending $300 + on skin care / makeup per year.

Enjoy your purchase!!! Glad you aren't feeling bad about it!
