Photographs with resume???
Permalink Closed

I have been job hunting & I have noticed that several, and by several I mean more than 5, have requested a photo with the resume. Some of these are for "marketing reps" & I have to assume some of them are for things like "bud girl" but there is one for an event planner. I really think I'd be good at that, but the idea that they want a picture is throwing me. Am I being overly sensitive? Isn't it against the law to discriminate on the basis of looks? Not to toot my horn, but I have been told that I am pretty, but I don't want to have to be pretty. That really bugs me.

Unless the job seriously depends on your 'look' (acting, dancing, modeling, etc), the should NEVER ask for a photo with your resume!  That is absolutely absurd!  Not sure if it's against the law or not though - probably only if you could prove you were being discriminated against because of your looks.

that is weird and it would definitely make me think twice about the job.  i've never heard of any job other than one in the entertainment industry that asked for a picture.

fyi, though--technically, it's not illegal to discriminate based on looks.  there are only a handful of things that qualify as a "protected class" that an employer can't discriminate on the basis of.  the protected classes are:  age, gender, race, disability, medical leave, pregnancy, marital status, and sexual orientation.

so, in theory an employer isn't behaving illegally by only hiring good looking people but it could easily be illegal in practice.  for example, what if the employer only considers blondes good-looking and thus only hires blondes?  and all the blondes just happen to be white?  well, there's a racial discrimination suit if i ever saw one...

laken1, in all of my crazy times trying to find a job in the event planning or marketing arena, I have never once been asked to send a photo.  I have seen jobs that request it and they usually are some kind of 'street team marketing' mislabeled as event planning.  The only time I've ever sent a picture with a resume is with my musical theatre resume (which is completely separate from my work resume) and it's understood in the performance world that resumes required a headshot as well.

I wouldn't apply for jobs that require photos.  They probably aren't legit.

Edited b/c I'm having major grammar and spelling issues this morning---must be old age setting in. Teehee!

Yeah, the whole photo thing makes me think of a stripper or something! Just thought I'd share more horrors in job hunting!
Thanks girls - glad it's not just me.
