just call me ashlee simpson....

i have a drs. appt on thursday morning about acid reflux.  i have been having issues lately and my mom and sister both have it, so they suggested that i should probably have it looked at...

however, i have it much more severely than my mom and sister have it... i asked my mom and sister what type of tests they went through and they didn't sound too bad... but i am still nervous...

anyone on here have this?  any advice for me?  i am such a wimp when it comes to the doctors office.  my mom, sister and boyfriend are lucky that i have finally scheduled an appt. b/c they have been fighting with me for 3 months to schedule one.

You should definitely get a prescription for it. My grandmother had it her whole life and now that she's old has to have surgeries periodically to remove scar tissue from her throat so she can swallow food!

Usually the dr. will just give you a prescription for nexium (the purple pill) or something similar and it will help so much! I have a friend who is my age and she has it and only takes the medicine when she needs it - hers is stress/busy related, so she knows when she needs it. I'm not sure if that's dr.'s orders or not but oh well.

You'll feel so much better after you get the meds anyway! Besides, acid reflux can lead to throat cancer if left untreated and you definitely don't want that.

Only if you sing that badly, and I suspect you don't! *s*

I have had trouble w/reflux in the past, though it seems to be pretty much gone now. Here's what I did:

Rx for Prilosec (before it was OTC; this was some years ago) that I started taking daily, and then tapered off to as needed. I still have some of it, so that should tell you that I haven't needed any in *quite* a while.

Tried avoiding foods that can cause it (not too hard for me, as I don't like a lot of spicy foods)

Put an old phone book between my mattress and box spring, under where my head would be when lying on the bed. The doc told me that if I sleep with my head lifted a bit, that should help keep the reflux from happening while I was lying down. It doesn't have to be a huge phone book; I used an old Vogue (you know, the thick August issue or something) as I recall. I never could feel the difference in the bed, so it didn't affect my sleeping.

I had reflux for about 2-3 years, on and off, and now it's really almost totally gone. I kind of think it was stress-related - I was at a rough time in my life, and really, really hated my job, so I think that had a lot to do with it.

My husband suffers from it and refuses to give up his spicy food, so he takes a lot of Tums. ~sigh~

The test I had was an Upper GI (GastroIntestinal), which means drinking barium - the chalky crap - it's truly awful, but there *are* worse things in life than having to deal with that. Though I think now they test for it differently; I'm not up on the current procedures. But it's good that you are going - you'll feel much better once the meds start working.

Sorry bex, didn't mean to hijack the thread I'm also interested in what the symptoms are.

Yes, I just changed it to my former boyfriends (of about 20 years ago) yesterday.  They still make me swoon!

there are a couple of natural remedies that are harmless and worth a try before you go on a drug.  black licorice is supposed to help, and cut out alcohol and caffeine, avoid all foods that trigger heartburn, and definitely increase water intake, your bladder will get used to it and you won't have to pee every ten minutes if you stick with it.

also, I have heard that taking a spoonful of vinegar will trick your body into producing less acid.

i also read that about black licorice.  if i could stand it, i would try it!

funny thing is, i can't link it to food.  so i think it is stress related... considering i am getting more and more migraines recently.  i tried cutting out coffee, alcohol and soda, but i still got it.  and i hardly ever eat spicy foods... so i don't know.  i guess the dr. will have to come up with something for me tomorrow.  i'll let you know how it turns out.  i'm going to fill him in on my migraines too... *sigh* i hate going to the drs.

well, i went to my dr. this morning.  he gave me a list of things not to eat (chocolate, caffeine, garlic, mint, etc.) and not to eat after 7 pm.  (apparently he isn't a workaholic like me!) and gave me a script for a med to take once a day for 6 weeks.  and then he wants to see me again.  and he gave me meds for my migraines...

basically, he just gave me drugs and sent me on my way... grrr... i dont really want to do the drug thing but since it is only for 6 weeks to try to "correct" the burning... then maybe it will be okay.

i dont really want to do the drug thing

Well, sadly, that's what most Western doctors do. If you don't want to do the drug thing other suggestions have been made here for you to try - if you think it's stress-related, try taking five minutes and meditating in the a.m. (or anytime during the day). I actually sit with a timer (I tend to be restless so it's tough for me to make it through) so I know I've done it - you'd be surprised at how long five minutes really is.

I concentrate on my breathing, and when something comes into my mind, or I start thinking about things, I try to push all that back out and just focus on the breathing. It really does help.

yeah, thats what yoga is for... its my meditation time... and that is an hour...

i think i am just a high energy go-go-go person all the time and it is starting to catch up to me as i get older... *sigh* i'll give the drugs a shot for the 6 weeks that he suggested but after that i am DONE....

I'm sorry, but doesn no one but me think it's funny that we ALWAYS come up with a fashion solution to every problem? LOL

Bex, for the record my husband had the surgery to correct his & he still has to take Prilosec pretty often. He said it was the most useless surgery ever! Take that with a grain of salt, as he hates doctors & surgery & medicine for that matter!

Cricket & shpqueenet, I also have a complete LOVE for Duran Duran - REEEEFLLLEEEXXXXX
