graduation gift

this may be in the completely wrong forum, but maybe not.

My MA graduation was this weekend and my parents gave me money instead of a gift. $500. What should I get? Part of me just wants to go blow it all at Anthro , but the other part says I should get something semi-practical that will last as a reminder of this time... or whatever.  I need suggestions! What would make a good gift for someone getting their MA? I don't want to deposit the money until I have a plan for it, because I'm afriad if I do I will end up spending it on something boring like groceries.

I would think about fairly durable items that will work with whatever your new career will be.  A good leather day planner book, a leather briefcase or portfolio, a new professional winter coat if you live in cold climes, a new PDA, a nice pen and pencil set, etc.  If you're still hunting for a job and don't have much in the way of work clothes, maybe a new suit or two.

Eh, I would probably spend it on a nice piece of classic silver jewelry or fancy shoes or something.  Something that you could keep forever and enjoy as your graduation gift.  I don't have any specific ideas right now, but i'll let you know if i do!

I agree. Personally, I'd get a great work bag.

thanks girls, I knew you'd convince me to get something that will last a while instead of just blowing it all. I actually think I'm going to get a nice string of pearls- I wear my crappy ones almost every day and would love a real pair- looks like they have some gorgeous ones on overstock too.

I got a nice leather planner from FH (I asked him for one), but if I have any money left over (checks from the grandparents have started soming in too...) I might get a nice interview suit.
