Question about mailing a check
Permalink Closed

If I write a check out today for a bill and send it today via mail - do you think there's anyway they company would cash it before Monday?  I'm thinking no since today's Thursday and it wouldn't get there before Saturday - right?  I just want to make sure - the money won't be in my account before Monday and I don't want the check to bounce.  If it helps - I'm mailing from Chicago, IL to Aurora, IL - which is what makes me nervous.  The only reason I'm doing this is because the bill is already late.

well, i know around here the mail is really fast!  i mail my mom checks & stuff from time to time & it always gets there the next day.  amazingly, even if i mail it late in the day!  plus, there's that new "check 21" thing, which i'm not sure if it's only cali, but basically it allows checks to be cashed like a debit transaction so the money is taken out immediately.  if i were u i wouldn't risk it, mail it tomorrow instead.  or, if u can, ask someone to borrow the funds & then pay them back monday when u get paid.  i've been in this situation so many times & it's just not worth the $30 overdraft charge, better be safe than sorry!

Actually it would be worth the $30 overdraft fee.  This is a health insurance bill and I'm worried that it will get cancelled if I don't send it.  I posted another thread on this, but this is my boyfriend's Blue Cross insurance...if i did mail it today and it got there before the money is in the bank - would the bank still pay Blue Cross and just charge us the $30 fee?  So confused...

Do you also have a savings account at the same bank?  When I overdrafted my account, my bank just took the extra out of my savings account (no fee).  Not all banks have overdraft protection though, so you'd have to call and see what their procedure is.

Do companies even deposit on Saturdays?  Could you call them and let them know that you're sending the check today and ask when approximately it will be posted to your account?

Also, a majority of banks are not set up to use the Check21 system yet.  And, both banks (yours and the bank of whomever is depositing your check) need to be set up, as well as possibly 3 or 4 banks in between that are used for processing (not all banks are being outfitted with the digital representation equipment).

Thanks girls.  I called Blue Cross and told them that we mailed the payment today and wanted to be sure they didn't cancel his insurance and they told me there is a 30 day Grace period before they drop you - so he's actually ok until Aug. 15.  I'm not mailing it until he has the money!
