My daughter's 1st birthday party is on Saturday & since we just moved I'm trying to save a little $$ where I can.
I'm making the birthday cake, for the first time evah . Im going to try making 3-tiers, a 10in, 8in, & 6in with strawberries inside w/cream filling. Do I just mix the strawberries with the icing I'm using outside the cake as the filling?
I'm using Wilton's Vanilla Whipped Icing Mix, which I hear has a light sweet taste, not super sweet like the ready made tubs of icing.
That should be ok if you slice the strawberries thinly. You could also do a whipped cream type filling if you wanted inbetween the layers with strawberry slices. That might be better and cheaper. Just a cup of whipping cream and some powdered sugar and mix with a mixer, fold in the strawberries and place inbetween the layers.

I don't know the last thing about baking much less layering cakes. Sorry I can't offer any advice. The last time I tried to layer a cake it was for my husband's grandpa. This nightmare cake came out so lopsided that I just added more frosting to the sides that were "uneven" It came out looking like a snowball. I was so ashamed, but needless to say he loved it. I hope you have much better luck than I did.
After all that, I just wanted to say that Lsu's idea sounds really good.
