Sucky salespeople!! so frustrating!
Permalink Closed

I wasn't sure where to put this story.. but it has to do with shopping.. so I'll put it here.

I went to the mall today on my lunch break and really wasn't looking for anything in particular. This made me walk slower than usual and stop and look in some of the jewelry store windows. I stopped in front of the Whitehall jewelry store and spotted a beautiful ring. Big and gawdy (just how I like it!) It was about a 5 carat Amethest (emerald cut) with small diamonds surrounding it. It was a pretty shade of purple, but i collect tanzanite and (if I was going to purchase something new) i would like it to be that. but I digress.....

The amethest ring was $399.99 and he was being a typical jewelry salesperson and telling me if I bought it today and today only, he could give me 40% off.. blah blah.

So I take it off my finger and put it back on the counter and say that I like it, but would only be serious about purchasing it, if it were tanzanite. He smirked and then started laughing OUT LOUD and glanced over at a co-worker and then finally looks me right in the eye and says.. "well if this were tanzanite, it would be VERY VERY expensive" He emphasized VERY like I was homeless and implied that I clearly couldnt afford it. I was soo mad, I glared at him and said "My husband and I have plenty of money and would have no problem investing in a piece of jewelry like that. Thank you." and I stomped off.

I mean really. People are so rude! Granted I look young, and was dressed in gauchos and a tshirt from nordies.. but I was carrying my marc Jacobs tote, I had my wedding rings on which consist of about 2.5 carats and another diamond ring on my other hand.. not to mention about 1.5 total carats in my ears. I may not always wear the nicest clothes.. but one thing I KNOW is that I have nice jewelry. I was so offended.

I also get very upset when jewelry stores pretend that they are giving you the best deal possible. I once read that jewelry stores like zales, whitehall etc have an average of 300% markup! Anyway, the point is this was not Tiffanys, it was a mall jewelry store in the suburbs of Philly.. and even if it was Tiffanys.. that is not the way to speak to a potential customer.

I'm not over-reacting.. Am I? I would like to hear your thoughts...

No -- it would irritate me profusely.  The thing I hate is when you go to eat out and you ask for something extra like a piece of cheese and they say--"that is 10 cent extra, do you still want it? ".  I know they are supposed to tell you that, but it gripes me.

RUDE!  That was very rude of him.  You are not over-reacting, but don't worry about it.  He is just some salesperson you won't ever see again.

No, I don't think you're overreacting at all, especially since he had that.....TONE in his voice with which he tried to belittle you.

I would love to go shopping in whatever outfit I like, but alas, I always try to dress to impress so that salespeople will be nice to me, or even talk to me! I am young (almost 23) and unlike you, I have no nice jewelry, so I feel your pain!

His attitude clearly shows that he has a self-esteem problem and is trying to make others feel small. Don't let this loser ruin your day, and try to think of all the nice salespeople you've met, instead!

By the way, did you decide if you will get your hair cut yet?

You are definitely not overreacting.  Sucky and pretentious salespeople are the worst.  Do they not understand their job?  They are trying to MAKE a sale geez!!!  I get really irritated when this happens to me too.  I am young and I don't always wear expensive clothing but that doesn't mean I can't afford nicer things.  They should actually be groveling at my feet since I am making a decent living and with my current few responsibilities, I have a higher proportion of disposable income.

don't you hate it when people assume you're some poor, young mall rat who must envy everyone around them?  I've had salespeople do that - sniff at me and go help the lady with blue hair and big diamonds.  So obnoxious.  I've gone back to them w/ my purchases and have said, "Look at the commission you missed out on."

You are not overreacting at all!!!!! I hate those types of salespeople so much!!!!!

I feel your pain since I am young (20) and look younger (I can pass for 16 when I walk out in Juicy...) and since I bear no resembalance to Lindsay Lohan or Nicole Ritchie or some other rich young Hollywood teen, I frequently get ignored at lots of high end places. Forget jewelry stores...they won't even help me! I don't always like how I have to dress to impress at these places to get the time of day.

I would be upset too, but you'll probably never see him again AND he lost out on any possible future commission.

Well, obviously if you know what tanzanite is you should know the price range!  What an idiot, he should have offered to show you tanzanite rings that looked similar to make a sale or went as far as changing the stone.  What a hoity toity attitude for a sales guy!

Joceybaby, you are NOT overreacting. I'm sorry this happened to you - sometimes people are just plain stupid. He was insecure and made himself feel better by putting you down. What a jerk!

I used to work for a jewelry store, and a lot of people, mostly young people, liked to come in and waste time (the salesperson's time), by wanting to try on all the Gucci watches, Movados, etc...and the fancy jewelry. It got very annoying (and I was 25 when I worked there, so I was right in that age range). But I did find that some of the "kids" (my age at the time and younger) were truly interested in the jewelry, and knowing more about it. I can't tell you how many people said to me, "Thank you so much for taking the time to help us. Most people just blow us off because we're young."

That made me feel so good, because before I'd worked there, *I* had always been to intimidated to go up to the jewelry cases and ask questions, or try something on. And you know what? Fairly often the parents of these kids would come in and purchase the item...for birthdays, or graduations, or holidays. I didn't talk to them in hopes of future sales, but especially during the day when it was slower, I never minded helping educate someone who was really interested...or maybe someone who just was starry-eyed over a big sapphire bracelet.

Unfortunately, many jewelry salespeople in stores like that prefer to use their knowledge - which in some cases, isn't much more than your average person on the street! - to act like they are superior to their customers. Especially the male salespeople. If you are buying a big, gaudy ring in the near future, I'd parade it in his store and show him the commission he missed out on....kind of like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. *s* -Oh, and apparently like Miss Mee - I just read her post!

Ooooh....that is sooooooooooooooo aggravating!!!  Have you thought about calling the store manager to complain about it?  I certainly would if I were in that situation.

I hate being judged by my age or by how I'm dressed or anything like that, actually.  I remember being like 17 in a mall and had an SA follow me all over the store to make sure I didn't shoplift anything.  So insulting!  And I really hate how sometimes if I go to a mall dressed nicely I'll get treated wondefully, but sometimes I'll go to the mall without drying my hair or something and I'll notice that there are NO SAs to be found anywhere or they're really snotty.  Ridiculous.

I don't think you're overreacting--I'd call them and let them know how insulted you were and that they lost a customer and potentially a lot of other customers too by telling us on this forum!

I lent a ton of money to people & quickly learned that you have no clue as to how much people have based on appearance. As a matter of fact, I was usually wary of people dressed to the nines with the latest & greatest fashion stuff - with good reason. EDIT: after reading my post I admit this sounds wrong - what I mean is that you shouldn't have to dress in your "fashion best' to have people wait on you - that is just a pet peeve of mine since I don't shop for "shopping" clothes - that just seems wrong!!!!

I also refuse to buy stuff from sales people - even stores - that treat me this way. Nordstroms is on the edge at this point.

You are not out of line - asshole.

Ew! No, you're not over-reacting at all.  This guy was out of line.  Was it the Exton mall?  That mall is just crawling with mall rats, but just b/c you look young or b/c of how you were dressed, this idiot shouldn't assume you're one of them.  And besides, he (as a jewelry salesperson), should have noticed your other (expensive) jewelry.  What an a$$.  I hate those mall jewelry stores.

Those dumb kids who go to the mall just to hang out and try to find new girlfriends/boyfriends.  In my mall, the stores are empty but the mall itself is not!  Oh, and also those girls who go into stores and bring a pile of clothes to the dressing room just to try on (for sport I guess) and leave it in a big messy heap.

ooooo that sucks!!!!  i usually have the same reaction as you did- say something smart and stomp off... but then i steam about it for the rest of the day.

i sometimes browse the counters and i find that if i do so with my boyfriend i usually get more attention (they think we are shopping for wedding rings, etc.) than i do by myself.  but i also find that they sales clerks are always trying to push their "knowledge" down my throat... esp. with emeralds.  emeralds are my thing and i can def. tell the difference between lab created and the real thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

grrrr.....  def. pull a pretty woman there if you end up getting your ring!
