UTIs??
Permalink Closed

Anyone have a problem with recurring ones? I've had 3 already this year. At first I was going to my gyno but she said I needed to contact my regular doctor for the problem. Fine. I go in to the regular doctor and they do a UA and gave me 3 days worth of antibiotics that my gyno gave me 5 days worth of last time (duh! I told them to give me different ones but whatever).

So today the nurse called and said there was no bacteria in my UA but there was some vaginal something, I can't remember the word she said but it's when it messes up the test - not a good specimin bascially.

Here's my gripe (aside from the repeated UTIs) - why does the doctor try and make me feel like something's wrong with me? I KNOW I have an UTI. It's the EXACT same symptoms as the other one's I've had and I read up online all about them and it's not odd for women to have repeated ones. The doctor is supposed to give me different/stronger antibiotics to figure out which works and finally kill the bacteria - according to webmd and such. But instead they gave me a smaller dosage of the same antibiotics that obviously didn't work last time (less than a month since the last one).

Anyone had any experience with these type things? Don't they know that sexual health (for lack of a better word) is a very important thing for people? Pshaw. Stupid doctors. They should be very clear in their explanations and sit down and explain all options with me. Instead I'm stuck being told to go to a different doctor and seeing a nurse all the time who doesn't know the answers to all my questions and obviously doesn't listen to me (the antibiotic issue).

I just had to vent.

aw sweetie!  UTIs are the worst thing on EARTH!!  i hate them!!  anyways... do u drink enough water?  i know that was my problem when i used to get them regularly.  i wouldn't drink enough & one time it was so bad i had to have an IV.  it was really scary but even that didn't teach me a lesson.  no, i had to go thru it one more time driving myself to urgent care at 3am cuz of the pain & having to shell out over $500 due to my lack of insurance before i finally learned to DRINK!!  since then i haven't gotten a single one & i'm so happy!

as for medications, cipro is the industry standard.  bactrim used to be popular, but most people are immune to it cuz it's been in circulation for so long so most doc's skip it & go straight for the cipro.  not sure how the dosage is on it, but i think 3 days sounds about right for the length of time u should be on it.  i know u gotta take several pills a day & there's all these restrictions about food & water & stuff so it's easy to mess it up, maybe that's why it didn't seem to work so well last time.  who knows tho, that's just my theory based on what i've experienced.  i hope they gave u piridium or some pain reliever too (or u could get that OTC too) to at least help w/ the pain.  if u don't get better in 3 days tho i would go back to the doc kicking & screaming for a better solution!!

hope u feel better girl, sorry u have to go thru all that!  HTH!

Aw, that sucks. I used to get UTI's alot. I have had one in years. (knock on wood).  They are the worst.  To keep them at bay, I drink tons of cranberry juice (100% juice, not cocktail) and water and I keep Uristat on hand in case one hits me and I need to alleviate the pain before I can get to a doctor.

I've had doctor's tell me before that there was only a minimal amount of bacteria, blah, blah, blah. Whatever, I *know* what a UTI feels like, dammit!

Feel better, blubirde.

Thanks gals. I would love to get my hands on some cipro, Crystal That's not what they're prescribing though - unfortunately.

I drink a bit of water during the day but sometimes I'm bad about it. I guess I'll just have to make it a huge priority. I also can't really stomach cranberry juice but I'm going to get some crantab or whatever it's called.

Nylabelle - I know exactly what you mean. Like I don't know when I have an UTI. Hello? Come pee out of my parts for awhile and then tell me what's up.

Haha, poor Blubirde. I had a year where I got like 3 or 4. Soemtimes I feel like there might be a UTI creeping up on me...but I just make sure I drink TONS of water, and it goes away. Ugh, I HATE UTI's. The worst thing ever. Thank goodness my friend had had them, because otherwise I would have freaked out when I got my first one. Cranberry juice is good too, although I've found that just drinking tons of water seems to take care of it.

I don't really like plain cranberry juice either, so I drink Cran-Grape and that still works for me.

Okay. So I took the 3 days worth of the same antibiotic I was prescriped the last time I had an UTI. Only the last time I was prescribed 5 days worth of medicine and the UTI still came back in a couple weeks. Common sense would say that a smaller dosage of the same antibiotic isn't going to work, right? Hmmm... ding, ding, ding!!!! The UTI (that they said I didn't have) not only didn't go away but is back with a vengance, so basically I took a 3-day cycle of antibiotics for no reason whatsoever. I'm so pissed. And in pain. I've been drinking water and taking azo like they're going out of style.

I'm calling my doctor tomorrow and bitching them out. Okay, I probably won't but I'll want to.

I would definitely say something to them about it.  Afterall, it's your body and your health and it's their fault!!!  Obviously, you don't have to be obnoxious, but just let them know that you're a little miffed.

Feel better!

I have had them before too. you are going to have to become good friends with Cranberry juice like the other girls said. Also, if you are getting them a lot, my doc told me that drinking cranberry juice that is natural, no sugar, is better then the sweet stuff. Also, try white cranberry with no sugar, it is less tart the regular. Also, my doc told me to make sure I am well, um, ventalated down there. Only wear 100% cotton panties, avoid nylons and other synthetic fabrics that don't let you breathe.
I would try to switch docs. If you keep getting UTI's and they don't give you proper treatment or antibiotics, you can end up with a kidney infection. That's what happened to me and I had to stay home for 2 weeks and take codine. I threw up like crazy and was in a LOT of pain!! Be careful.
Good luck and feel better!

Aha!!! I have an UTI!!!! I'm so excited!

And before you women wonder what crack I'm smoking, let me give you the history. Got on end of June. Turns out it never went away, which was why I got one beginning of July. The shitty antibiotics they gave me for that one didn't make it go away either (see post above). So I went in again and they did an UA and said I didn't have one. My ass! But the nurse called today and after a culture, they determined I had one and are giving me some serious antibiotics this time - thank god.

So, as it turns out, I haven't been having repeated UTIs, I've just never got rid of the 2nd one I got in June.

I was beginning to think I was crazy or that something else was seriously wrong because if I didn't have an UTI, why was I having all the symptoms?

I'm ticked it took the dr. so long to diagnose it but I'm glad she finally did so I can get the proper treatment and get it over with. Sooo.... yay! I have an UTI!!
