heart rate monitor

Can anyone recommend a good heart rate monitor?  I do mostly cardio (eliptical), but I do run 4 to 5 miles about three times weekly.  I'd like one that includes distance and calories burned, but since I mostly do cardio, my main concern is time in target heart rate.  I'd like to keep it under $100, but if there's something out there that's really awesome I'd be willing to spend more.  Any suggestions?  TIA!!

I was just about to come to post the same exact thing, almost word per word!  I'm interested in any recommendations as well, any reputable websites to buy as well?

Polar makes some of the best ones.  I think that you can find them in all price ranges depending on how fancy you want.

I have the Polar A7 (I think).  It is a pretty basic model.  It just shows my heart rate, will give the average heart rate, has the time and has a stopwatch.  I love it.  The machines at the gym will pick up the signal and you don't need the clunky watch which was made for a man.  I basically have one because sometimes I get lazy when doing cardio and don't push myself enough.  I like the Polar my only complaints are: the watch is too big, sometimes if you are working out beside another person wearing a monitor it picks up their signal and sometimes the receiver on the machine is broken.  I find mine useful and I love seeing how high my heart rate gets when I lift too, but I am a nerd like that

Polar is definitely the best. I just got this in blue for the more girly look and profile:

I recommend Polar also.

Make sure you get a model that won't "cross" with someone else's monitor if you plan on using it in the gym a lot.

I have the Polar M61

You can get them on e-bay for pretty cheap.

I work at a health club and the personal trainers recommended the F6 to me, and i love it. It has all the things you said you were looking for in a heart rate monitor, and its really easy to use.
