I am finally purchasing my own auto insurance and I am overwhelmed. Which insurance companies do you guys use/recommend? I was with Farmer's under my parents but they were supposedly overpriced.
I use Progressive and I really like them. I've looked into several companies and they offered me the best rate. I've had two claims since I used them, once my husband was in an accident and once our car was hit while parked, the agent we worked with was really awesome both times. They also have a great roadside assistance program.
I would probably get quotes from few companies, a lot of them will give you free quotes online.
I have Progressive and love it. Every 6 months they lower my rate considerably. Maybe because I'm under 25 and have no accidents and have been deemed not a risk as others my age.
As an Insurance Agent, here's my suggestions, companies vary by state.
Progressive has become a standard company (used to be non-standard) and have recently began lowering there rates which is RARE! Good Claim service
Ohio Casualty has great claims assistance and there rates are really good. Especially when your able to have a home/auto package. Or a renters policy/auto package.
State Auto is a very good company and there rates are generally really good.
Thanks everyone! I will check out progressive, costco, and my mom is checking with AAA for me. Its what she uses. Do you guys know how many years it takes to clear an accident off my record??
Call around - it really varies. When I was switching to my own insurance a while back, the best rate was from State Farm, and I've been with them ever since.
I had a really catastrophic car crash about 4-5 years ago, all my fault, no excuse whatsover, huge blemish on my driving record (distracted/reckless type of stuff) and they were so awesome to me through the whole thing, no problem, very easy, never made me feel bad about it. I didn't drive for a couple of years (having totalled my car I was saving for a new one) and when I came back they welcomed me with open arms despite my now tarnished driving record with rather excellent rates as well, the best I found. They continue to provide great service and prices. I also have home insurance throguh them. Can't rave enough.

For those of you with Progressive and Geico do they do renter's insurance for apartments? I'm with Allstate right now and haven't had any problems but my parents are paying. Come either Sept or next March I'll be on my own and looking for something cheap since I'm under 25.
just an update, I compared a bunch of quotes, and I think I am going to go with Progressive. They gave me the lowest quote for the coverage. lsubatgirl I have renter's insurance with Geico. I bought it before I needed auto insurance, but yes most companies give a discount if you get both through them. Progressive offers renter's insurance too.
