Lately, I've been in this mindset, and it's really been helping me cut back on my frivilous shopping (and trust me, i'm a BEAST when it comes to shopping!). I started thinking about what type of outfits I see myself wearing, and then create a list of clothing in order to get the outfit I'm picturing. I think it helps a lot, because you start to develop your own style. Thats one of my biggest problems; I buy a lot of cute clothing, but then later I realize that even though I like the clothes as themselves, it doesn't truly reflect my style.
I think it's a cool new way of thinking about clothing and fashion, plus ever since I've been thinking like that- I've cut way back on my shopping!
This fall, I see myself wearing fabulous dark jeans, cute fitted tee shirts, classic worn-in button up shirts, converse sneakers, and vintage-looking belts. Unfortunatly, I can't really picture any great sweaters. I always feel like I look bulky or chubby in sweaters, and I can't really re-invest in a ton of sweaters for the fall. So I guess I'm going to have to find ways to update my old sweaters to look well-fitted and stylish.
For going out, I see myself wearing mini skirts and any flashy tops. Even if they are passe, I wear them with a sense of humor and carelessness. Or nice jeans and great-fitting tank tops that flatter my umm "modest" chest.
Hmmmm....I may have to start doing this myself, b/c I usually just go out and BUY TONS of things, and end up either not wearing them, not wearing them for a while, or giving them away. THIS MAY ACTUALLY WORK FOR ME TOO!!

I've gotten really picky about fit, recently, which at least for me cuts way down on the amount of clothing I buy (because of my body shape, a lot of pants and button tops just don't work). I also don't buy an item if the general description matches something I already own that is in good shape (open-toe black 3" heels? black and white print knee-length skirt? green and white striped top? got them all!). This latter is nice because it prevents the closet-full-of-black-pants problem.
Along the same lines, I've been making lists of things I need and sticking to the list. I'm still building my ideal wardrobe and I was getting so frustrated at having so much stuff in my closet, but none of the right things. It's not exactly the most fun way to shop, but after sticking to the list for a few months, I'm noticing that my wardrobe is a lot more workable and eventually I'll be able to start adding in a few more fun items.

I've been doing both of these too and it really helps so much! Especially caring about fit- I have so many things I never wear becasue I don't like the fit on me, I def. don't need any more. what a waste of money!
In the past year, I have really figured out what kind of clothes are worth buying- simple good quality things that I get a lot of wear out of. I do like those cute hand wash tops as well, but my daily outift usually consists of jeans or slacks with a polo and blazer or cardigan.
Emilie-There are a lof of thin fitted sweaters that don't make you look bulky. Jcrew has really great sweaters. This year, I am going to buy their cashmere sweater (at the outlet) since I wished I had bought it last year.
Cortney- I guess I have a couple of nice-fitting sweaters, but I'm just not thrilled about them. I don't know, there's just something about sweaters that doesn't excite me, lol. If I could I would live in a place that has fall weather all year long. So I could get away with wearing shirts and blazers everyday.
