Yes I know I'm supposed to be on the shopping ban (I don't want to hear it) but I swear I can't find one, single dress to wear to this wedding this weekend!

At first I was going to wear something I already had because a boy invited me and it's in New Orleans and I don't know anyone, etc. But then - and after I already said yes - I find out the boy's ex-girlfriend and her new husband and all his old college friends are going to be there. How could he not tell me? So now I want to dress to impress. Oh, and the other condition is, when I was discussing what to wear with him, he asked if I had anything conservative. Conservative???!!! What? Of course I don't. And by conservative he meant plain and boring not "covered up" because I don't have that problem. And there is no way in hell I'm wearing something plain and boring to a wedding where people are going to be examining me. Unfortunately my style runs from funky to Austin hippy-ish. I abhor plain dresses that look they can be worn to church.

I've been everywhere: Nordies, Saks, mall stores, boutiques, everywhere! And nothing is right. Except for some stuff at anthropologie but of course there's no Anthropologie in Austin. Bleh. I do have 3 dresses on hold at Saks (a Betsey Johnson, BCBG on sale - from last season I think but at this point I don't care, and some other green flowy thing that I'm leaning towards).

Where are you girls when I need you? I so wish you all were here in town and could take off with me tomorrow to do some more boutique shopping around town. I'm stuck with indecision!!

Wedding details: New Orleans, Saturday night, 7:30 at the Wyndham on Canal Street. Any thoughts as to how to make something plain special? I'm all out of ideas...

Do you have pictures of the dresses you have on hold?? Maybe you can spice up the dress with accessories (cool hat, layered necklaces, brooch, clutch...etc)

I just have to say - Screw the guy who wants you to dress PLAIN - in New Orleans, no less!!! Where do you find these guys??? LOL

Seriously, what is the deal with that? I can't believe you would dress plain ever anyway. I would think he's want you looking your absolute hotest. Does he not know you well & that's his way of saying not to dress slutty? I guess I don't get where he is coming from.

I'm highly jealous, BTW, I feel in love with my husband there, so be careful!!

But ok, I'll look for something - begrudgingly!!!!

rocky - I've tried and tried and tried to find pics of the dresses online but I can't find them anywhere! The BCBG one is on sale, so that makes sense but the BJ one is regular stock so I'm not sure why I can't find it anywhere. And I can't remember what brand the other one is and I haven't had any luck finding it either. Here's what they kind of look like.

BCBG (except the one I have on hold has a pink sheath underlayer and a brown tulle material on top - I'm not sure the strapless dress is the most flattering look for me. I think it makes my shoulders look fat - can that be?)
Bari Jay Strapless Organza Dress

The BJ dress was this style, except without all the layers and it had rainbow stripes horizontally across the chest and vertically from the chest down. It actually doesn't look like this at all but it's the closest I could come to shape.
BCBG Max Azria Embroidered Tulle Party Dress

And the third one kind of looks like these two smooshed together, except with more vertical wifts of fabric instead of horizontal like the second one.
Laundry by Shelli Segal Smocked-Waist Gauze Dress Laundry by Shelli Segal Tiered Chiffon Halter Dress

Oh and I tried this dress on and it's not nearly as cute as it is on the model. It makes me look preggos. And not in a cute way either.

laken1 - he means plain and boring. He himself is plain and boring. I had to take him shopping for something to wear to the wedding. At first I marched him into Nordies but he balked at the prices so then we headed over to BR. I picked out a cool, non-striped shirt for him and a bright green tie. Very BR preppy cool. His idea of something to wear was a dummy that had black pants on and a purple tank top. I was like, "are you serious? I would never." He still doesn't see what's wrong with. Boys. He doesn't know anything though! If I'm going to be the "girl" at this scene, I'm going fashion to the max and screw what those fools think. (Well, hopefully they'll think I'm a very stylish and cool girl from ATX but whatev.)

This SO made me laugh. Well, I think you go wearing what you want, I mean, really - you know how to dress!! I'd ask you why you are even going, but hey, a cool wedding in NO sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe you will meet someone new & exciting & ditch boring guy in his black pants / purple tank ensemble!! LOL

So are you going to go with one that you have on hold? they all look pretty - I don't want to fuel your shopping ban - are you POSITIVE you don't have something you can wear? Ok, had to ask, but if not - do you have accessories to go with any of the things you have on hold? Shoes, jewelry, a cool clutch - something as Rocky suggested? Maybe we can tone down the amount of new things you HAVE to buy

Do you know for sure how formal the wedding is? The only reason I ask is because of the time and the fact that it's in the South (a wedding that late usually means pretty formal). I would double check with the boy on how formal it is... or look at the invitation and you could probably gauge it. If it is formal, I would wear either fancy cocktail dress or something long or tea length that's pretty nice.

ROFL I can't even imagine you wearing "conservative" and I don't even know you. I don't have any suggestions but wish you well in your search and hope you have a good time at the wedding - a N.O. wedding should be a blast!

BTW this boy sound duller than dull and you didn't mention if you are dating him or just being his "date" at this wedding as a favor? If you're dating him, I hope he's got a great sense of humor and a personality to match yours. *s*

Have you tried Ann Taylor?  I know, I know...VERY boring. But, I was in similar situation as you are in right now and I actually found a beautiful (and yes, conservative) dress there.  In fact I've worn it to several other events and I always really like it.  Anyway, just a thought.

Yep, I went to Ann Taylor before Saks yesterday. Bleh. Gag. I wondered if I'd wandered into my mother's closet. Actually I sometimes like AT stuff for work and such but I'd never shopped there for a dress before. But when I went in there - omg. Maroon flowery skirt? *shudder* I'm going to hit up some boutiques (I have a coupon!) after lunch and then maybe check out Nordies again - sale and all - but if not, I'm buying the green one from Saks. It was pretty and flattering and kind of funky.

Oh, and laken1 and rocky, I have tons of jewelry and clutches and shoes, etc. (hence shopping ban ) so I'm cool there. Besides I already decided that if I need new shoes for the dress I'm heading to Payless. I'm not typically a Payless person but I have a greater good to consider here - my shopping ban. And I do have something at home I can wear but all my more formalwear is very *fall* or black. And I know you can wear black to a wedding nowadays but there are a few things I still fall back to tradition on, i.e. no all black or all white at weddings.

atlgirl - the boy is dull. But he's sweet and very polite and considerate and given my more recent experiences, doesn't really sound too bad. But I'm just his date for the wedding, which I'm sure will be awkward enough considering the motley crew that will be there.

I'll keep everyone updated and thanks for the ideas and support!
