I really love this anthropologie dress because I love cats, but I am hesitant because I am turning 40 in August.  Last year, I wouldn't have thought twice about wearing it.  I get told all the time that I look very young for my age, but I don't want to buy into that too much and dress younger than I am really supposed to.  What do you think?

Well, liking cats and liking to wear cats are two different things, KWIM?  I find the dress a bit too precious in general for an adult to wear, and I'm only 25.  Not that it isn't a very pretty dress, because it is!  But it's quite girlish.

I have to agree with Elle on this one. I'll turn 38 in August, so I know what you mean by wanting to be stylishly young without dressing too young. Personally, I think that dress falls into the too young category. Sorry.

Is there an Anthro near you for you to try on the dress? I use a litmus test when trying to decide if a piece is too young for me. I try it on and think "What would  my teenage cousins think of me wearing this? Would they think I was cool or would they think I was trying too hard?" Usually the mirror will tell you the truth. Don't look at the outfit, look at yourself in the outfit.

I don't think it's too young. But like any piece of clothing, if for any reason you wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it, then you shouldn't buy it.

I think with a pretty cardigan and shoes, you wouldn't really notice the cats cause the dress is so pretty

It's not my personal style because I like deeper color tones and I shy away from prints, but I don't think that it looks too young! It's really cute! I say it depends on your personality, I don't think age makes a difference.

I could see an artsy, whimsical 50 year old wearing this if she so wished!

To be honest, if you hadn't told me that it was a cat, I don't think I would have known. So I saw this as a purely floral print and...I don't see why any woman can't wear this print. It's floral but it's not too sweet and not too garish, you know? I think it's great.

But I also think trying it on in person would be a good idea, things can look totally better/worse IRL.

I think if you try it on and feel that it looks age-appropriate then you should trust your judgement and go for it!

I agree!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.  I think I am just not going to let myself be defined by my age, but at the same time I am going to be careful if I have doubts about something.

I don't think it's too young! I think it would look cute with black tights and not-too-precious shoes and a black cardigan or something. Something to toughen it up a bit so it's not so sweet.

I wouldn't notice the cat either.

I'll be 39 this year and I wouldn't wear it, but it's not my style. It wouldn't have been my style even when I was young - unless worn with black tights, boots, and a ripped denim jacket. And I probably would have cut 12 inches off the bottom hem with scissors. And then my mother would scream at me - mission accomplished.
