Shopping Ban Girls - I need advice!
Permalink Closed

ok ladies, so i may already know the answer to my question (or at least the "right" answer) but i want some feedback anyways.  so my best friend (since 3rd grade) who has lived in colorado for the past 4 or 5 years is moving back home to LA.  we had a falling out about 2 yrs ago which lasted for a lil over a year but now we are back on track & i have seen her twice since we made up (when she visited her family in LA).  ok, so she is driving from CO to CA & on the way her & her roomate (whom i've met & like) are stopping in vegas.  she wants me to meet up w/ them & i really want to, but the only thing holding me back is the money.  i really want to see my friend (although keep in mind i will see her anyways when she gets back to cali) plus they are gonna see "thunder from down under" which i've never seen & sounds like so much fun.  ok, so here's the costs:  r/t flight - $125 (if i purchased yesterday it would have been $88 but i didn't know what time they were getting into town), hotel - $23 (super cheap!), show - $50 (not super cheap).  so overall a little more than a pair of jeans, right?  and my best friend of almost 16 yrs is certainly worth a pair of jeans!!  but the reason i joined the shopping ban is cuz i'm in debt so spending $200 is not exactly helping matters.  what should i do??? (i've u've made it this far, thanks for reading, i totally appreciate it!)

This is definitely a tempting situation. Is there anyway you could drive and save the plane ticket cost? Vegas is only like 4 hours from LA... The hotel is super cheap, and maybe just skip the show and hang out with them for all the other stuff???

I think you have been doing very well on your ban, and its not exactly shopping, and you should get a reward/treat now and then. If you could do this trip under $100 then I think you should go for it. I hope I am not enabling you too much.

If I were you, since you will see her anyway when she gets back to Cali, I would not spend the $200. Being in debt is really tough and just think about how much you want to improve on that situation, not exacerbate the problem.

My advice would be different if you knew that this would be your only chance to see her for a long time -- I'd say make the exception and go for it, in that case.

That's just my opinion, hth!

my thoughts: if she is a very good friend, and you guys talk about everything, just explain her the situation as you did with us. She'll understand for sure, you'll get to see her anyway, and you won't feel guilty once you come back home...

I agree with this...I spent two days with my best friend of 5 years in New York and we went all out because we only see each other maybe once a year. But if you're gonna see her in LA anyways after she goes to Vegas...I think you should be honest and tell her that you really can't afford to spring the amount. If you can drive the way, maybe do it...(but then I don't think chillin' on the 15 in the middle of nowhere on the way to Vegas sounds like fun)

BTW, see you tomorrow.

If you really want to go, I think its worth it.  I would only go if you really wanted to see the show though- otherwise, since you are close enough to vegas- you could go another time.  Thats just my honest opinion, but i'm not on a shopping ban, so I don't know!  While no one will ever save money if they go on every trip they want to, no one will ever have fun if they say no to all of them!  Keep in mind that you would probably spend more money while you are there though.

thanks so much for the advice ladies!  i was thinking about driving but i'd still have to pay for gas (yes, less than a plan ticket, but...), my car is fairly new & i don't wanna put so many miles on her, and it's not exactly safe/fun to drive to vegas alone.  i'm thinking more & more of saying no... i know she will understand & everything it was just more of something i wanted to do for fun, but i just looked at my CC statement right now & realized that i have no right spending money!  thanks again & see u tomorrow Lilykind!

ah, crystal! i feel your pain (as you know) but the thunder from down under? that show rocks!! i don't think i've ever had so much fun at a show in my entire life - ever. but if you go, i recommend vip seating. it's only like $11 more but it's soooo worth it. the hot naked men dance on the vip tables and you get to touch them all you want (they tell you so). even just thinking about it makes me want to act crazy and yell in a room with a bunch of rowdy women. woo-hoo!

so, not to be an enabler, but i would definitely go. it sounds like so much fun. how much will it put you back on your plan? a month? a few weeks? that's worth it for a fab trip with friends you don't see very often. especially if it's all girls.

ooh, u little devil!!  luckily i already declined.  also, i just wanted to add that it really was fate that the plane ticket went up in price cuz otherwise i would have bought it yesterday morning & then been really bummed when i found out that i have a verbal presentation on that exact day (which was announced yesterday afternoon, but i'm sure it's been in the syllabus all along).  so that's the only day of the whole summer that i actually HAVE to be in town (it's an online class so i never have to be anywhere as long as i get my work done).  phew!
