Girls that are good with accessories/vintage- HELP
Permalink Closed

I came across this stylediary and I think that she has such great style- I even messaged her a few times to say that.  I am so impressed with how she puts things together and doesn't use really expensive pieces- it has inspired me to think more about style, and less about spending money.  As you can see from my stylethreads, I have some pieces that I love, but my outfits are very boring to my eyes.  What are some tips for those that are great at working accessories?  Where do you look and what do you look for?  It seems like many of her pieces are vintage- what are some tips from you girls that are good at vintage shopping?

Here is the awesome stylediary- I hope this inspires others as well!  It is on the main stylediary page but i didn't notice it until recently.

I love the bag in this pic:

and this dress is freaking fabulous!  She said a lady offered her $500 for it when it cost her $12.  I wouldn't sell it either!

I think your ability to find awesome vintage stuff depends on where you live. In NYC there are so many people with fashion sense and knowledge that it is hard to find great stuff in the cheaper thrift and consignment shops and the better vintage stores can be ridiculously pricey. But, when I used to spend my summers in Connecticut I was constantly finding tons of great vintage clothes for dirt cheap. In general, I've had the best luck in charity-run thrift shops (not huge places like Salvation Army though, those take sooo much patience).

I like to browse on ebay for accessories. When I am bored or while watching mindless tv I will look through the listings in the vintage bags category.

Here are some things that caught my eye today (although my monitor at work sucks so they might actually be totally gross):

canvas and leather bag currently at 3.95.

snakeskin with bakelite clasp currently at $25.

teeny leather purse currently at $19.

OMG... This girl IS Carrie from SATC. Some of her looks are a little out there, but most of them are beyond fabulous.

I don't have any tips about vintage accessories... but I LOVE these looks.

sfclinevandy- I actually think she looks better than Carrie!!  Carrie had some great looks- but sometimes I was either like eh, or what the...  Of the ones you posted, I love:

I hope if she ever comes across this discussion that she doesn't get freaked out and think I am obsessed with her!!  Although... I kind of am, haha

I think it's interesting how she says that she builds her outfits around her accessories - I will do this for shoes & have thought about it for accessories but can't say that I actively do that. I have a necklace that I LOVE (won it) that I have never worn because it never fits with my outfit. I need to start with it & go from there. I've often wondered about this because some people on our own thread style always seem pulled together by their accessories (I particularly think of smash maybe? someone who collects vera scarves on this board, I think it's her) - the accessories just put on those finishing touches. I keep saying i'm going to do this but never do....

I love her diary - it is great. Maybe we should invite her to come play with us over here!!! I really like that site but get overwhelmed - i hate searching randomly. Thanks for the heads up. I am in love with her $4 black victorian shirt

Edit: i read honey's comment & that's almost exactly what i was going to say. Like this combo - I think it looks awesome, #1, i'd never think of it, #2, I'd feel like an ass walking out of my house in that. I think you have to be very confident in your style - which she obviously is with perfect reason. Man, i wish i could pull that off!!!!

first i think you have excellent style! second i agree with cc, buying vintage is a bit easier when you don't live in a very fashion forward place. i love vintage bags and used to get so many in college, but in nyc, finding affordable vintage ones is a challenge.

one of the things that i notice about her style is she's not afraid to combine multiple accessories. a lot of people only do one or two, but i like how she incorporates several into her outfits.

i don't necessarily think i'm "good" with accessories or vintage, but i do love vintage accessories and the instant unique punch they add to any outfit. i usually browse and buy on ebay although it's time consuming and hit or miss. i think you just have to follow your own instincts and sense of style when deciding on a piece (which you already do so well). if it speaks to me, i bid on it and hopefully win. also, i think once you start adding more and more accessories/vintage to your collection, you'll find it easy to come up with combos that you like... much in the same way you do with your tops, skirts, shoes etc. as far as vintage stores and consignment shops... the few (and i stress few) i've ventured into seem pretty pricey and i simply don't have the time to spend rummaging at thrift stores so i'm not much help there.
