Is late night snacking really that bad?
Permalink Closed

I've tried to quit it, but it always comes back. Maybe it's because I'm a college student, and I do the majority of my eating after 10, lol, but I can't stop eating late at night! I know you're not supposed to, and I was able to quit it for about a month, but for the past week I've been doing it again! And the worst part is that I went off my diet, and I'm eating lots of bad stuff like cookies and icecream.

I might be able to get myself to maybe only snack on healthy stuff. Would it be okay if I tried to keep late night snacking to healthy, non-junk food stuff, or should I suck it up and stop all together?

Also, I wanted to ask for any tips that might help me curb my late-night cravings? I usually stay up really late, and I feel like my diet would be so much better if I went to bed early around 11. Then I probably wouldnt snack at night. But because I usually end up going to bed around 2 or 3, that gives me like 3 or 4 extra hours of temptation!

I need help to kick this bad habit, or somehow make it a bit healthier! The funny thing is that during the day I'm really good, and have no problem staying away from junk food.

I'm thinking about getting appetite suppressents to help me stay away from late night snacks. Maybe something herbal, has anyone tried any that worked?

I'm a college student as well, and I used to have the late night snacking problem. Believe it or not, eating breakfast helps more than you know. Getting on a schedule of eating breakfast, lunch, a afternoon snack, and then an early dinner, really helps your body get on it's own eating schedule. Having a regular bedtime, and getting up at the same time everyday, helps with this eating pattern too.

Ever since I joined the 9 to 5 world with my job, I've noticed that my body naturally took to this eating schedule. I think that eating late is bad. Youre body doesn't do a good job of digesting food when you eat within a couple hours of bed time. I don't know if this happens to you, but sometimes when I get up in the morning, I'll have an upset, growling stomach. I think it has to do with eating late. Ever since I stopped eating before bedtime, I don't have this problem.

So my advice is eat breakfast, don't skip meals, and have a regular sleep cycle. If you just can't stand it, I don't think eating something healthy and light would be that bad before bedtime. Hope this helps!

Please don't take any appetite suppressent crap. It'll only do more harm than good.  As for eating at night, scientifically a calorie is a calorie, no matter if you eat it at 9:00 AM or 3:38PM or 11:30pm. The only thing about it that is bad is the fact that you have no chance to burn off that food before you go to bed so it's just sticking in yur stomach and your body is just absorbing it. If I get hungary at night I snack on fruit, sugar free fudgesciles, cereal, or my favorite, smartpop minibag popcorn which is only 100 calories and fills you up. hth

I don't think it a bad idea since you go to bed so late.  I was in that schedule during college as well, and I need to have a little something to eat about every four hours or so.  Just keep it fairly light--no junk!  I used to have a little snack around 10.  I second the minibag of popcorn, and sometimes I would have cereal or yogurt and granola or fresh fruit.  Save the junk for occasional treats during the daytime only.  I found that it helps to not keep ice cream in the house.  I love ice cream, but if I don't have it on hand, it makes me actually have to go to the ice cream shop for it, which takes up time and money, so that helps to cut back on it.  Also, try eating breakfast, which may help you not crave the bad snacks before you go to bed.
