i know what you mean about thinking....but this isn't *insert favorite designer* but I usually only feel that way when I want that item pretty badly and want it exactly how they have it (same fabric, factory stitched seams.) If I like the shape of something or am merely inspired by a designer piece- I am so much happier to make it myself if its not too hard.

I voted sew it. I am brand new to sewing (and knitting) and am thrilled at the chance to learn to make original custom tailored for me clothing and to be able to say 'I made it!'. :)

honey, I think I have found a pattern we could adapt to make that blaec jacket. Here is the link--it is the second one in the picture. The collar would have to be made a little large, the jacket more fitted and shorter. What do you think?

hmmm, i'm on the fence about this one. my mom taught me to sew when i was in high school and i used to make all of my homecoming / prom dresses etc. so i know how great it feels to make it yourself, but i also know how time consuming it can be to make it fit perfectly and how expensive your materials bill can end up after you've found all the right fabrics. you sound like an accomplished seamstress with the know-how to pull it off, so i say... if you have the time to spend on it and you know that you will finish it and wear it, then it is totally worth sewing. i guess i'm just at a point in my life right now where i don't have the time, so i'd just fork over the money for the real deal and spend a few bucks on alterations if necessary.

i can sew fairly well and mom is a top-notch sewer so i grew up with mom always saying "you know, we could make that for 1/3 of the price...."

i still look at clothes and think that same thing- but i know that i dont have the time to find a pattern (or piece patterns together which is what i usually end up doing), find the material, cut the pattern, cut the material... and on and on and on....

so if i really want it- i'll buy it. or i'll have my mom do it. for example- my mom is making me a black satin swing dress as we speak for my boyfriend's birthday...

that is my 2 cents!

I'm a novice sewer and once made this dress to wear to church. It actually turned out great, but end result was more formal than I thought it was going to be, and somebody thought it was my prom dress! As for a dressform, I once saw this website that had instruction on how to make your own dressform. A replica of your own body by using a t shirt and duct tape. You have a friend help duct tape you up. Obviously you cut it off, but I don't remember how they finish it.
