cleaning suede?

I have some light tan colored suede shoes - how do I clean them? Areas are getting a little gray, but there's nothing that I could just brush off, as far as I can tell.

There was another thread about this a while back (in regards to shoe footbeds), and someone recommended getting an ordinary suede cleaning kit. I tried it - mine was $3.99 at Rite-Aid, you get what is like a big soft eraser and a brush. For not-so-dirty areas, brushing works wonders, and for dirty areas, the eraser helps lift the fibers and rub off the dirt.

It even got the really icky footbeds of my year-old sandals much cleaner!
