Angelina Jolie Adopting Ethiopian Girl
Jul 6, 7:28 AM EST

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is adopting an orphaned Ethiopian baby girl, an official said Wednesday.

Jolie visited the Horn of Africa nation last week to file her adoption request, accompanied by her 3-year-old son, whom she adopted in Cambodia, and actor Brad Pitt, her co-star from the recently released "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

"The paperwork has gone through. Miss Angelina's request was accepted last week. Everything has been completed, so the family can take the baby whenever they want," Hadosh Halefom, head of the country's state-run adoption agency, told The Associated Press.

The child "is less than a year old," Hadosh said, refusing to elaborate.

Hadosh said Jolie met the 10 conditions for adopting a child from Ethiopia.

"The two most important are economic capabilities and check with the police," Hadosh said. "Although she is a film star, she still has to meet the same requirements as everybody else."

The country of 70 million has more than 5 million orphans, their parents lost to famine, disease, war and AIDS — a catastrophe the government has said is "tearing apart the social fabric" of the east African nation.

Caring for the orphans costs $115 million a month in a country whose annual health budget is only $140 million. Because of that, Ethiopia has gone out of its way to make adoption easier.

In 2003, a record 1,400 children were adopted from abroad, more than double the number in the previous year. The number of private adoption agencies in Addis Ababa, the capital, has doubled in the past year to 30.

Ethiopia has enacted strict laws to thwart dubious adoption agents and to ensure that the orphan really exists, that the paperwork is not fraudulent and that no AIDS-infected children are being passed off as healthy.

Agencies charge fees of around $20,000 per child, a relatively inexpensive fee compared to many other countries.

does anyone know if billy bob was involved in maddox's adoption?  just curious cuz i thought adoption agencies were kinda strict about single parents adopting so maybe this means her & brad ARE a couple!  i mean, i know she can handle it financially, but u would think the adoption agency would want a father figure in the baby's life especially since she travels so much & will need someone to watch the baby while she is on set.

I don't know. I can't see them putting up a stink about her adopting, she is like the adopting spokeswoman! I'm sure they are happy as pie to see her all over every tabloid and entertinment news venue with her cute adopted boy, and now girl. I bet adoption has gone up or at least from where Maddox lived because of her. It is great that she is possibly opening peoples eyes to adoption, but I just hope these kids are getting a good life with her. I'm sure they are treated well and get whatever they want, but when it comes to family values, she isn't the best role model.

crystal i think the standards in foreign countries are different than in the U.S. not that they're lax but my understanding is that there is so much bureaucracy in the U.S. that adopting a child becomes really difficult (i.e. the single parent thing, it's harder to adopt if  you're a gay couple).

honey's right, from what I've read it really varies from country to country with respect to allowing single parents to adopt.

forgive me if this is too blunt and causes offense, but in a country racked with famine and AIDS, with five million orphans--FIVE MILLION--if there is a wealthy American woman with enough care and love to want to adopt one of those poor desperate babies rather than conceive her own, I really think whether the baby has an adequate "father figure" has to be at the bottom of their list of concerns, which is exactly where it should be. She is rescuing that little girl from, at the very least, poverty and suffering, and at the worst, an ugly, early death. I'm not suggesting that babies from third-world countries be given out without proper background checks simply because their circumstances are so dire that anything has to be an improvement, but I think we should be applauding what she has done rather than fretting over whether she sets quite the example of family values that we might like to see. And personally I think the tremendous amount of money and effort that she has poured into humanitarian causes says a great deal more for her character than all her known and rumored romantic indiscretions.

oh gosh, i feel like a jerk now!!  i was merely suggesting that maybe her & brad really are together.  i definitely do not have a problem w/ her adopting on her own, i'm sure she's more than qualified which she has already proven w/ maddox who she seems to love dearly.  i think that someone who can afford it should definitely be able to adopt alone from a country where the children are in such desperate situations.  i really didn't mean to sound like i was against it, i was only trying to think of more reasons to prove why her & brad are together... i guess i get carried away in the entertainment section sometimes.

BBT is Maddox legal father and he said once in an interview "I see him when my schedule allows" I have heard that means never.

Adoption standards are different all over the world. I THINK China requires two parents, but Mikacat would no more about that. Some countries require two parents that are together for a X number of years. Other countries require one parent, so Ethopia maybe one of the countries that require only one parent.

I am really glad she is adopting. My mom and dad have really been looking into adopting orphans from the tsunami. Countries effected by the tsunami are speeding up their adoption process to find these kids good homes.

i've read in interviews with angelina that billy bob pretty much flew the coop when she first brought maddox home.  for what it's worth, i've seen her around new york a couple times, first with billy bob before the adoption and once with maddox.  she looked worlds happier when she was with her son -- she had a happy smile and a definite glow about her.  in person she's incredibly beautiful.  anyway, that's my two cents worth of insight!  i agree 100% with how sephorablue put things.  angelina jolie really puts herself out there to help people and i respect that.

I read that in ethiopia single women are allowed to adopt but single men are not.  I heard on tv that she was the only one to sign the papers, but I do believe Brad will be very involved in the baby's life. They also said that he accompanied Angelina to Africa to pick up her new daughter.  They are definitely a couple(for now).
