My boss just told me I suck
Permalink Closed

I have been working for the same company for over 5 years.

My boss called a meeting with me yesterday to tell me that I am not good enough at six things.
I feel like crap.

I have been wanting to quit for a while now, and I know that I have not been "into" my job, but it still really is hard. I mean, I feel like I have ZERO confidence in applying for a new job because he took it all away. If I am not good at this (I am an editor for a magazine) job, what makes me think I would be any better at another magazine??

Thanks for letting me vent. On top of all of this, my bf and I just broke up after almost two years.

look at it this way: it is one person's opinion. you shouldn't take stock in what he said. i mean you've been there five years! you are doing something right. rather than take this as a dig, i would take it as incentive to look for a better job with a better boss! (ie someone who inspires you to do your job better, not the opposite)

sorry to hear about the bf. it's hard when everything comes at once.

Aww, I'm sorry.  As for the boss, I would consider the source when dealing with his comments.  If you don't like the guy but respect his opinion, just look at his criticism objectively as things you can improve on.  Easier said then done- but he's helping you out in the long run.  If you think he doesn't know what he's talking about, then forget him.  You will do fine at another place!  Sorry about the boy

I was a writer too, and sometimes if they think you're thinking about leaving, management will deliberately try to sabotage your confidence. Also, the business attracts some weird people, and your boss may be one of them. I'll bet if you get away from him for a little while, you'll feel better. Besides, he's probably just rolling the shit downhill. The meeting he had with you was most likely a CYA so he can tell HIS boss "I had a talk with killa and I think we'll see some improvement in a few areas." That way, he looks good - even though his department isn't doing well - and you don't (can you say scapegoat?). Fun, huh?

I used to work for the devil, and I've seen it all, baby... Hang in there. It gets to be fun if you can get to the point where you just don't give a shit.

PS - I would send him a memo promising to focus on the five things he mentioned, then neglect everything else to make a few cosmetic improvements in those five things. Then make him so sick of hearing about those five things that he will never, ever see you as a likely scapegoat again. Oh, and try to get caught chatting with the CEO or some other bigwig. If you can't, name drop. It's the working world equivalent of stop-drop-and-roll to put out those little reputation fires...
