Baking question...need help quick Update
Permalink Closed

I know this should go in the food section, but I need help quick and I figured more poeple would see it here.

Anywho, I am ATTEMPTING to make a cake from my bf's bday. It is today, but he and I are celebrating it tomorrow. I was told by someone that I should make the cake tonight and frost it tomorrow. I didn't really ask why, but I was wondering if this is something I should do? I am going to cut it and make it into a dinasaur and they said I should make it the day before to give it time to cool. I have enough time to do it now if I hurry before I leave tonight, but I didn't know if this was a must or not.

Thanks ladies. I am hope alone and soooooo not a cook/baker, so I really have no idea what I am doing.

It is going to look like one of thsee.

You'll need a couple hours for it to cool before you can frost it so if you have enough time for that tomorrow it'll be ok, or make it tonight.

Ditto - a few hours should be fine - those are adorable BTW - take a picture for us to see if you think about it! That is uber sweet, too

Let it cool an hour at room temp, (10 minutes in the pan, then on a wire rack, but you probably already know that). Then freeze it for about an hour or two if you have time. Just enough to cool it completely. When you frost it, take a little bit of frosting, thin it with a splash of water so it spreads really easily, and cover the cake completely with this before frosting it with the regular frosting. This sort of seals in the crumbs. Also, you probably already know this, but work slowly and in small sections to avoid pulling the cake apart, because it will be a little soft. You should be fine, though. Have fun! I love to cook but I haven't really made much since school started...

okay, well i may be the only one, but i'm seriously a fan frosting on a not completely cooled cake. it soaks in all the nooks and crannies and get super moist. yum! it's more difficult to work with because the cake can pull apart but ah! frosting soaked cake - soooo good. hope it turns out all right!

dizzy has the right idea. brush off the cake. frost thinly once (to seal in moisture) then frost decoratively!

Thanks for all the help ladies. I made the cake. I think it will taste fine, but it is such a mess. I have a new found respect for wedding cake makers.

Don't think there will be a picture laken.
