Business Dinner UPDATE

On July 13th I have a customer flying in for a visit.  We will be taking him to dinner.  I have never been to a business dinner, I was wondering if anyone had a few pointers on etiquette.  Especially etiquette on what to order from the menu.  TIA


 


 


Tonight I went to dinner with my customer it went great.  He had so many nice things to say about me, and he told me that my other contacts have been very impressed with my performance.  It was very nice to hear b/c I have only been at this job since the end of May.... Also I had missed a meeting today b/c I was with my customer all day, as i was leaving i heard my boss paging me.   I went into her office and she gave me a $100 master card gift certificate.  I was so pumped everyone in my department got one, but since i wasn't there for the whole quater i was suprised.  the GC was for an excellent quater.  Sorry i am rambling, I am just very excited, b/c the other day i was ready to quit b/c of the stress i deal with on a daily basis, i guess you have to take the good with the bad.  Thank you for the advice dinner went great!!

I don't have THAT much experience with this, but I would say don't order anything that you eat with your hands (unless it is that kind of restaurant) or that can be potentially awkward to eat, like spaghetti or lobster.  Also, if it seems like everyone is leaning toward a certain category of food, like everyone is getting a dinner salad, I would probably just order a dinner salad, too, even if I really want the steak.  Don't order more (or less) courses than the rest of the people at the table.  I wouldn't order a dessert unless other people did.


I'm sure you already have good etiquette though.  You'll be fine!

just follow everyone else's lead.  i do a lot of biz dinners and usually i ask what everyone thinks they are going to order- or ask the waiter what the house specialty is.  then just go with that.  i usually eat steak when out for biz.

As someone who does this at least once a week, but normally more like twice or three times, I would say order want you want.  Everyone else at the table will be.  As long as you have nice table manners you will be fine.  Just brush up on which one is your water glass and enjoy the dinner. 


When I am with colleagues at business dinners I never cringe over what they order, but have found that some people do not understand what are appropriate topics of conversation.  As long as you understand this (I'm sure you do), you've got it made.  It is amazing what some people think is appropriate to discuss over the dinner table.  Hard business should wait until after dessert, anything that talks about fluids, horror, religion, politics, etc. is strictly forbidden.


Beyond that keep your elbows off the table and ask your clients if they want to order wine and if so, what they like.  Then ask the waiter for his rec. if you are not a wine person.  I've found that the more wine you get in your clients, the easier they are to deal with...and if your table manners aren't stellar, the more wine they have, the less they'll notice!

here are a couple of table manner pointers that always helped me, esp. if you're sitting at a round table.


1.  make the "ok" sign w/ both your hands--the one that looks like the letter "d," your right hand, is for your "drink" so your water glass will be to your RIGHT.  the hand that looks like the letter "b," your left hand is for your "bread" plate, so your bread plate is on your LEFT.  this little trick is very handy--get it, HAND-y? hee hee.  ok sorry that was really lame, i just couldn't help myself.


2.  work from the outside in to figure out which fork to use.  the fork on the outside will be the first one you use, for the salad.  the one closest to the plate is for the entree.

I used to go to a lot of these, and the only thing I can add to what everyone else said is that I always try not to wear a strong colored lipstick. If it gets on your glass, it will look gross. If you do leave lip prints (this is a problem for me, even when I use light gloss) casually wipe it away with your thumb so it doesn't look icky.
