My Kitten is Sick
Permalink Closed

I feel bad posting this right now, but I'm really worried about my kitten.  He is just a little over 4 months old, and last Friday he got spayed.  He's been totally fine though ever since, it didn't even faze him, he's been playing and running and eating and everything normally.  This morning when I woke up, he had thrown up at least 4 times, and it looked like he also spit up a light pink, reddish liquid, it was just kind of more in a trail (sorry if it's too much details).  I cleaned everything up, and gave him new litter, etc., but the whole time he just laid on his little bed watching me, which is not like him at all, he never just lays there.  I went over and pet him and reassured him, but, I didn't know what else I could do.

I had to go to work, but I'm really worried...should I take him to an emergency vet tonight, or try to leave early and take him today?  Or should I wait to see if he feels any better?  I have no idea what could have caused him to get so sick, I don't think it could be the surgery since he's been fine all week, so I think he must have gotten into something last night, but I have no idea what...

TIA for any suggestions.

That would worry me.  If he isn't up to his old self when you get back from work, I would take him to the vet.  My cat throws up sometimes, but just hairballs, even though I give her hairball control/weight management food for her lazyness.  This is my last cat though.  She's been with me over 5 years and has at least 10 left if health problems don't come up.

Just a couple of questions: What color is your cat food? Is it a short or a long hair cat?  Are his ears hot?

Our cat food has red pieces and brown pieces in it so if my outside kitty ever throws up and it is red we don't worry about it because the food will make the throw up red.

If it is a long hair cat it is likely that it was trying to throw up a hair ball and it might have taken 4 tries to get it all out.  Short hair cats though do get hairballs so it still might only be a hair ball issue.

If his/her ears are hot then they might be running fever.  If they are only just a tad warm then I don't think its fever.

If you get home and he/she is still in bed and hasn't eaten then go to the vet.  Otherwise I'd wait until tomorrow morning to see if your kitty gets any better.  It might just be a freak thing.

Aw! I hope your kitty is okay.  It's scary when you think you're pet might be sick.

Thanks for posting LSU...his hair is short, but he has been shedding a lot lately.  I didn't think to check his ears, but will do so as soon as I get home.  Hopefully he'll be able to rest today and will feel better.  I'm hoping it's just a fluke thing, I feel so bad for leaving him , but I just couldn't call in today, and there really was nothing else I could do.

if it's possible, take him to a regular vet while they're still open. Emergency vets are overpriced, and they don't know your animals as well. I am praying everything is OK.

everyone had good recs. also pull his skin. if it falls back slowly onto the body, he's dehydrated. also he may just have felt sick from all the trauma of everything so maybe he'll be himself by the time you get back home! but if he seems weird definitely take him to the vet. dont' wait it out.

i'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Is your cat a male or female? I was just a little confused because you said "spayed" but called them cat a boy.

With out a more info and seeing the cat it is hard to tell what could be wrong, but this popped into my head. Could he have eaten or swolled somethign he should not have?

A few days ago a lady brought her cat in and the cat kept vomitting and was acting really lethargic. He had swolled a barbie shoe from her daughter toys. It was stuck in his throat and he kept gagging him. Not to freak you out, but that is what I thought of.

They are a few post-op complications from having your pet altered. I would definatley call your vet and explain to them what is going on. They will most likely urge you to bring you cat in.

Good luck.
