Help! What Should I Wear?
Permalink Closed

I am going to see the musical Wicked on Saturday night w/my boyfriend and his family.  What kind of outfit should I wear?  I haven't been to a musical in a long, long time  - I'm assuming I should get dressed up, but not super dressed up.  Help me w/suggestions please!  Thanks!

we go to the theatre a lot.  the last time i was there was in the winter time and i wore my black knee boots, a black straight knee skirt and a black cashmere turtleneck with a pashmina.

however, it is summer and you can't rock the winter outfit!  ;)  i would go with a slightly dressy work type outfit.  something that you might wear to church but with a little bit of flair.

and i can i tell you how jealous i am that you are going to see wicked?  i am seriously considering getting tickets for when i am in chicago for work, but i dont know if i can swing it time-wise!  have fun and please report back!!!!!!!!

Bex - I'll definitely let you know how Wicked is.  I'm so excited to see it!

I have a white, knee-length skirt from Banana that I am thinking of wearing.  Any top, shoes, accessory opinions to go w/it?  Or is the white skirt a bad idea?

I wouldn't stress out too much. I saw The Phantom of the Opera twice in the past two weeks, and people were wearing everything from evening gowns to cargo shorts and t-shirts (!!!). I usually wear a skirt, a bright camisole and a cardigan -- would that work?

ETA: Please tell me how you like it! I loved the book, and the musical is coming here next season.

I was just in a local production of Wicked! It's a great show and I'm sure you'll love it. The white skirt will be fine. But I would suggest you bring a cardigan or something to cover up with as some theaters keep the temperature low. But like Halleybird said, don't stress too much. I've seen everything, from jeans to cocktail dresses being worn. I'm sure you'll look great. Have a good time!

oh the white skirt would be cute!  just some strappy sandals  and a cute cami would look adorable.

side note: it dissapoints me that no one dresses up for the theatre anymore.

wicked is the best show i have ever seen. i loved the book and loved the show.

however, i do NOT love what ppl wear to the theater in NYC. it's the THEATER for g-d's sake! have some respect! ppl are in jeans and flip flips. fine, have fun on a field trip, but who taught these people how to dress appropriately? AH! Ok, sorry for the rant.

I think all the above suggestions are great. skirt w/tank or cami and cardi for the chill. or nice pants and sweater set?

HAVE FUN!!!!

I love the idea of the white skirt with a brightly colored cami and cardi, plus strappy heels. You will look awesome. I'm so jealous you get to see Wicked!!!

I am not terribly in love with what people wear to the theater in NY either. I admit that I've only ever worn jeans to Broadway shows...however they've always been very nice and I've worn nice tops with ballet slippers or heels. And I love my best friend dearly and I know she can't afford to have many nice clothes but she wore a polo and sweatpants with touristy athletic sneakers to Movin' Out with me...

I'm not going to see Wicked in NYC, by the way, it's here in Chicago too!  But I get what you're saying about being too casual at the theater.  Ok, I will definitely wear my white skirt then and pair it w/a cami and cardi.  Thanks for your help ladies!

i am constantly disappointed at the lack of effort people put into their clothing decisions when going to the theatre or ballet or opera or whatever similar event they have tickets to...

shopchicago: i think your decision to dress around your white skirt is a good one. it's nice to be dressed somewhere in-between sweats and ballgown. personally, i like to be a little over-dressed than under-dressed. PLUS! i always look at it as an opportunity to wear something fabulous from my closet.

my july "what to wear" feature has an outfit for the theatre... what timing! i don't think the new features will be posted until next week though. boo. look for it anyway!

I agree.  I was so excited to go to a play in January and wanted to really dress up but was disappointed to hear that I would be over the top.  I still wore a cocktail dress and my bf wore a suit so that we could at least be somewhat nice looking.  So sad...
