I don't think my kitty is going to make it
Permalink Closed

I woke up this morning and my poor kitty has just gotten worse.  He can't eat, he can barely swallow.  Everything we put in him is just shooting right out and he is just pitiful looking.  He tries to walk but takes one step and falls over on his side.  It is just so sad.  I feel awful because I don't know what to do and I don't want him to suffer.

We went on vacation last month and he was neglected at the vet's clinic and by the time we got him he had gone from 15+ pounds to 6 pounds in a week!  He was dehydrated and had to be on a drip IV for over a week.  He caught a sinus infection and has been on 4 antibiotics and nothing seems to stop it.  It slows down but won't go away and its just making him so weak.

I feel so bad and hate that this happened.  My vet is out of town and my mom took him to another one that they recommended.  I don't think that there is much that could be done since we have tried everything and its been a month with no improvement just gotten worse. I told her that its fine to put him to sleep.

Its just so sad and I feel so bad about it.  Its hard to try to figure out when to give up and when to keep fighting. I just can't seem to stop crying over it all.

Thanks everyone.  My mom just got back and unfortunately he died before they could start the IV fluids to put him to sleep.  I guess he wanted to decide when he was ready to go instead of us.  He was such a good kitty.

Tati- we boarded him for 10 days while we were on vacation and they had too many animals boarding so they didn't pay close attention to him.  We told them before we left that the last time he boarded there he quit eating and to call us as soon as they saw he wasn't eating and we would come back and get him.  They didn't notice until a week later and didn't call us either. Very upsetting since it is family friends.  I'm not going to dwell though since it happened for a reason.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. I've been fortunate in the sense that I've never had a cat long enough to go through that, but this last one seems to be in it for the long haul. I know how much a cat means to it's owner so again I'm terribly sorry.

That seems really strange about the boarding at your vet. Is there anything you can do about it to spare other owners?

I'm so sorry for you and your cat.  I know how hard it must be because I am absolutely fanatical about my cat and I can imagine the pain you are in.  Whenever I leave my kitty for a vacation I am very apprehensive and people always say I'm overreacting, but now I know there is no such thing.

Regardless of whether it was a family friend or not, you should anonymously report them to a higher authority.  There is no excuse for the way your kitty was treated.

Unfortunately no one is going to take care of your animals better than you. The vet's office took terrible care of my dog the last time we boarded her. It doesn't seem to make sense that a vet would neglect an animal that way. Anyway, I'm very sorry to hear about this and can only hope that your kitty lived a long and happy life.

My advice to you, and what helped me was to go out and get another kitten. Some people feel like that's a bad idea because you're trying to replace the one you lost, but it's not true. You can never replace a dear friend, and a kitten will bring so much joy into your life. It'll help ease the sadness a little.

omg, LSU, I'm so so sorry. He's happier now. ((((hugs))))

Are you going to pursue anything against the vet's office? I'd be out for blood.

ITA with this.  For what it's worth, a good friend of mine lost her dacchshund last week in a freak accident at their lake house (there was some sausage on a fishhook and he swallowed the whole thing, hook and all).  She was absolutely devastated and hysterical and had to take ambien for 2-3 days just to get over the shock.  Anyway, within a week she got a new daccshund puppy and she is doing SO much better.  She said caring for the new dog has been extremely therapeutic.

No.  He was an old kitty and not even expected to live as long as he did.  He was 13 this year.  He was born with 1 deformed kidney and he managed to live this long because of the way we took care of him.  I think if he would have been a healthier kitty to begin with he probably would have survived a sinus infection which is what he had.

As far as another kitty goes I'm not ready and neither is my family.  We do have a dog and an outside cat to take care of.  Plus I'm moving in a month and I can't afford a pet deposit right now   Maybe around Christmas I might consider getting a kitten.  I just don't know if I could go through this all over again.  So awful watching them get sick and die and you not being able to do anything.
