Bar Widows or Survivors?
Permalink Closed

My fiance is in the middle of studying for the NY state Bar Exam and he gets so frustrated and is up and down mood wise all the time. It is hard to be supportive when I only talk to him about 2 minutes everyday. Anyone go through this already or take the bar themselves? We do not live together but I am trying to give him his space so he knows I care but I am not smothering him or keeping him from his studies.

oh good lord! I took the bar and it was one of the most insane times in my life - ever (with one small exception). seriously - it's just bad. I'd run to the coffee shop every morning and not stop until lunch. And then I'd run to the library all evening until it closed. My studying was usually interrupted by crying phone calls to my friends and family, convinced I was going to fail.

I HATE the bar. It's horrid and terrible and does really weird things to people.

If I were you, I'd just stay out of his way. Consider yourself alone until the end of July and do some stuff just for you. He's going to be no good to you at all. And the only things you can do for him are (and if you know me at all, you know I would normally NEVER advocate these type things) laundry and have some food around the place. I honestly did not wash the pair of jeans I was wearing for like 3 weeks in July. It was gross, yes, but I'd broken my foot and it was the only pair that would fit over the boot on the bottom and I didn't have time to wash them. And I never had time to go to the grocery store. Those are the two things I wished someone would have done for me.

One other tip: Sleeping becomes a real issue as July rolls around (at least for me). I'd start easing slowly into some sleeping pills to figure out which ones work for him - don't make him drowsy in the morning, how much of one to take, etc. - because otherwise he will not sleep at all during the bar and will be that much worse for the wear.

I feel sorry for you nycshopgirl. I hope you have some friends who can help you unwind after stressful dealings with him. One more month to go, girl! You can do it.

I 500% Second this! I know it might be difficult to want to do things for someone who is "too busy for you" You'd be the best fiance ever if you got him food and just promised him down time. I was just dating my husband when I was stuyding and he was a trooper! We laugh about it now. I remember just wanting to be with him for about 5 min a day and not think abt the bar, then i'd freak out and not have 5 minutes....the bar does crazy things to your head! Trust me, and blubirde, it will be over soon and all he'll want to do is relax and have fun with you. I remember eating the same exact thing every day for 1.5 months. i was unable to make any decisions besides a/b/c/or d (or e if there was one).

GOOD LUCK!!!!!! To you and to him.
