We are going camping this weekend (its a long weekend for us- Canada Day) and I'm stumped at what to take for food. I don't want to bring the little propane stove b/c it is too bulky and IMO it makes the food taste weird. Besides hotdogs, what are some things I can cook/heat up over and open fire that would be good to take?

you can wrap stuff up in little tinfoil packets and put it on the edge of the fire (in the hot ashes) to cook. Things I like this way are potatoes (slice them and put in a little butter and some chopped chives), corn of the cob, marinated squash and veggies. You can do meats/ fish too but I am always afraid it won't cook thouroughly enough so I wouldn't do chicken (although I gues you could precook it and then just heat it up). But maybe a steak or a fish filet would be good.

you could also do shish kabobs like you would a hotdog.

here is my menu usually to camp for some reason if backpacking. (if you will have a cooler, the options could be much better)

b-fast -- apples and trail mix

lunch-  homemade chicken salad sandwiches

dinner---like stated above--potato in foil and vidalia onion in foil, steak (put in a ziplock bag with a little olive oil, worsetechire sauce, pepper and garlic and carry around all day letting it marinade)

cook over open fire and put onion and potatoes in ashes.

usually on the 2nd day---

b-fast -  apples, instant oatmeal and trail mix

lunch- rolls and canned meat of some sort.....dried fruit

Just bring a meat thermometer!
