I'm not from NY and I've never been but I know that they have a few H&M's so if you've never been you should go. They have nice, affordable clothes.

Lucky you! I have always wanted to go on a shopping spree in NYC. I have wanted to shop at H&M, but I still don't understand why they don't have a store out in the northwest! They don't sell online either do they? So definintly check that store out!

Well Miss Callie, if I may say, you and your mother have picked a fabulous place to go. I adore New York and try to visit whenever I am in the area. It is a beautiful city so full of fashion; to list where to, and where not to go would leave me breathless.

But I will give you this piece of advice: always wear comfortable shoes while shopping. Never buy from the section marked as 'Clearance', because it is just last seasons clothes you do NOT want to be wearing. Go into any second hand or thrift stores you see; New York is famous for its vintage wear dated all the way back to the 1700's. Besides, someone's garbage is another person's treasure. It's not what the clothes can do for you, it's what you can do for the clothes, so be creative while shopping and choosing what to buy. But most of all, HAVE FUN! Enjoy your time in New York and soak up as much of the city as you can.

I know people have had trouble there, but I still think Century 21 would be a great place to find some great deals. But I understand you need to go mid-week?????

I disagree w/ the clearance thing. Just as vintage wear is "someone else's treasure," so are clearance racks. I don't care if it's last season as long as I still like it. Plus, the places where most people live don't really take much notice if your shoes came from 2004.

I defintely second Century 21 for designer deals. You'll find super-high end stuff that you can only dream about at full price within the realm of afforadbility. Loehmann's is good too for the same purpose although they tend to specialize in more midrange brands.

Anthropologie has a store in New York City. Hit the sale rack. Drool.

It may be worth a side trip to New Jersey one day to the Garden State Plaza (30 min bus ride from Manhattan) if you want to shop at mall stores (like Abercrombie and its sister store Ruehl) because there's no sales tax in New Jersey. In Manhattan I think the tax is 8.3125 % now...and if you're spending lots of money it sucks to have it go towards anything other than clothes.

You guys probably have H&M in Canada but the New York flagship store on 5th Ave. is certainly a spectacle!

if you want vintage a good place to go is the flea market in chelsea (26th & 6th i believe). they usually have a good selection and imo they tend to be cheaper than the actual vintage stores. there's also a good outdoor market on bdway, i can't think of the cross st. but it's near nyu. they have a decent selection of jewelry/tees,etc. and near the back there's usually some people with vintage clothes.

imo the easiest way to do nyc is to hit the main strips, 5th ave is good for the big guns. i usually start at bloomies (59th & lex) then walk west to 5th and go down. you'll see saks, bendel's, bergdorf's (if you stop on madison, barney's is at 6th & mad and that co-op is my fav. in terms of selection and sales) there are also several h&m's one on lex & one of 5th. the 5th ave one is my fav. but i haven't been to the one on lex. also i don't really agree with the clearance rack stuff. depending on what you're looking for you can get great deals on stuff, and almost every major dept. store is having sales right now. it's a good way to pick up cute stuff from designers like ella moss, joie, c & c, etc. at more affordable price points.

34th street is a good place for chains, b/t 5th & 7th there's a bunch of stuff. david z and shoe mania are good places for shoes. david z. is on 5th & 35th/36th (one of those) and they usually have really cute shoes. shoe mania is great for sneakers (converse, puma etc) and the 2nd floor has some great bargains (i was in there on fri. and they had frye boots for like $70) also there are 2 h&m's, a steve madden, zara, f21 (a great place if you're on a budget and looking for trendier stuff) gap, old navy, and a huge macy's. macy's can be overwhelming but they have great sales and an excellent shoe selection on the 5th floor. pretty much every type of mid-range shoe is there from nine west to bcbg. however lilykind had an excellent idea. if you're going to do chains, imo it's really worth it to hit garden state plaza, since the tax can be a killer. i believe the bus is the 111 (i'll double check) it's like $6 bucks round trip and it's a nice day trip. that mall pretty much every chain store imaginable, br, gap, old navy, arden b., bebe, french connection, abercrombie, hollister, ae, etc. etc.

i also recommend soho. it's helpfuly to use broadway as your landmark, and then veer off to the side streets. it's a great area to pick up stuff from street vendors and get the true nyc experience. bdwy has a lot of major stores, and the cute little boutiques are on the side streets (prince, wooster, mercer) my fav. boutiques on bdwy are atrium, lounge, zabari, and another one that i can't remember, but it's across from the bloomies (which is also worth visiting, since it's easier to manuever than the main one.) bdwy also has a great selection of what i call "ghetto hootchie" stores -- essentially the type of store that specializes in disposable/trendy clothing. places like know style, amsterdamn boutique, and necessary clothing are great for picking up "hot" items (jessica simpson style pants, drapey tops, tiered skirts, shrugs, yada yada) at good price points usually b/t $20 & $40. if you're up for the walk you can start at century 21 and walk up. also there's the market (i think that's the name) but it's in soho and features lots of stuff by new designers, and most of the prices are very reasonable for the type of one of a kind pieces you get.
