The online bf ~ update
Permalink Closed

I mentioned him a bit in threadstyle, and BrazenCanadian asked for it, so here goooes! I met Ešvarš online 2 years ago, he lived in Canada at the time, about an hour away, but I was too young to go and meet up with him. About a year and a few months ago he moved home to Iceland, because his student loans fell through and he couldn't afford to live here anymore. About a month ago I decided it was high time to meet this fella and figure out where to go with this relationship, so I booked a flight to Iceland. Now I am reeaaallly nervous, if we work out he will be my first bf. And since he moved home he lives with his parents, I'm staying with him, so that means I am meeting my bf, and his parents for the first time ever on the same day! lol. FREAKY! He is a bit older then me, (just turned 29) but I guess love isn't a number!

I am 18. But just some creepiness factor control; When he contacted me he was 26, and thought I was 18, and he only ever contacted me to lecture me about being careful with people online. LOL.

be sure to be careful!  that is very far away- let everyone know exactly where you are going, etc.

I do understand your fear...it is not neutral territory where you are meeting him and he has all the control of the situation...but it sounds like you have gotten to know him...right? do you feel comfortable with him?

Yeah, I've very comfortable with him. And I'm not worried at all about him being a psycho or anything. I've verified his identity with the university he went to while he was here, I've seen him with his friends, parents, etc etc. I talked to his mom online, and briefly on the phone, as well as his sister, and I made some dog collars for her wedding. So I'm pretty comfortable with them I guess, I'm still nervous though. :P I guess I could post some more info about him, not just how we met. He's really smart, he has two honours BAs, one in history and one in political science, and he plans to get his Ph.D in political science to become a professor. Well...he DID anyways, before Iceland, now I think he really wants to stay there. He's really nice, he wrote me a poem yesterday! Holy cute! What else... well here is a picture of him:

Also he has a funny accent, and that's CUTE.

that's very exciting!  i am sure you can't wait to meet him.  i am confused a little, though -- if you haven't met him, how have you seen him with his friends and family?

not to throw cold water on your big trip, just be careful and aware of what's going on all the time.  you'll be on his territory in his house and that's a vulnerable position to be in.  he sounds very sweet and like he's not a psycho, but it's good to be careful.

I was pretty much in the same situation as you are in. I've been talking to this guy from AZ for 2 1/2 years and we've been really serious. I finally met him a couple of days ago. He bought my airplane ticket and paid for my stay at the Hilton. I met him June 16. I left the 20th. I had soo much fun. I was glad to finally meet him. BTW I'm 18 and he's 20. I'm soo glad he is coming to TX in early August.

I told him about this, he thanks you for the compliments, and chastises me for picture choice! How vain! He wanted me to point out that the pic was taken when he was in the UK, with the flu, and forgot his shaving stuff. Sure, likely excuse, eh? Claudia, I am happy to hear that you had fun and liked your online bf! Have you ever seen that show Elove? It always makes me laugh to watch it, and compare the couples to my own online dating experience.

- oh haha, forgot to address questions, I meant seen them in pictures, on webcam, etc.

I totally relate because I was in the similar situation. I met my husband online. I was living in Japan and he was in Florida. We chatted on messenger a lot (actually, I really didn't like him at first), and then he started calling me and we had an instant connection. After talking for about two months we both agreed that we wouldn't see anyone else until we could meet in person and figure out where our relationship could go. That was in early November.

I came stateside for a visit at the end of March, and I met up with him then. Like your guy, he had just moved so he was living with his parents, so not only was I meeting him for the first time, I was meeting his family too! I was soooo freaking nervous, especially since my best friend is a total relationship cynic and she was telling me how horrible it was going to be, etc, etc.... I even threw up on the plane.

Anyway, I got there and I'll admit that it was a bit awkward at first, but after a few hours, everything was so amazing. We just had this instant comfort level. It wasn't like I'd never met him, it was just like we hadn't seen each other for a really long time. It was awesome. I take awhile to warm up to people, and I've never had a connection with anyone like that, not even on a friendship level. I spent about a week there, and then I had to go back to Japan for another six months. We maintained our relationship until I cam back in October, and then we were married in December. We've been married for a year and a half, and it's wonderful. He is my best friend and the most wonderful person I have ever met.

Good luck! I'm sure that if you've managed to maintain an online relationship/friendship for that long, everything will be fine. When are you leaving?

just out of curiousity, how do you meet an online bf?  I have a friend who has been dating his met-online gf for 3 years (they live near each other, so its a relationship not conducted online anymore)- they met on the Weezer message boards.  I have no idea how exactly this comes about though.

Oh, that's a great story tri_sarah_tops!! I'm glad that you two got along so well. I will be leaving July 1st. Lynnie, I don't know really, I guess you just get messaged by someone, and keep messaging back and forth. I guess I could tell we were sort of phasing into the relationship thing when I couldn't wait to talk with him, and we were both staying up til like 5am on MSN talking about anything and everything.

Well I don't have an online bf but I do have a guy I've been talking to for about 6 years online.  We don't talk all the time like we use to but we keep in touch and its pretty cool.  I actually found him one night on AIM where they have find a buddy by common interest and I randomly picked him since he is from an area where my grandparents lived and we just hit it off.  We've never met but we've come close and joke about it.  One of these days we probably will meet up just so we can say we did.

Good luck Kisa and post some pics of your trip when you return. Check some of the past posts in the travel section if you want to know more about Iceland.  The name is escaping me right now but someone did just go there in the past few months and posted pics.

That's so cool! I'd be nervous too, but just have fun! He'll be nervous too. What about going to a restuarant with just him right when you get there, preferably with just him, so that you can chat alone and get to know each other in person a little before having to deal with the whole parents and house thing

kisa, I wish you all the best! Your BF is soooooooo cute! I'm sure that your boyfriend's family will be receptive and loving and warm.

I met my BF on an online message board when I was 15 and he was 28 so I totally understand how you feel. At the time he was in Los Angeles and I was still living with my parents in New York. We started dating in September 2001 as I was starting my freshman year of college in Virginia. It wasn't until May 2002 that we finally met in person. I felt so comfortable with him because I already knew him so well and it just just as tri_sarah_tops said, you're not meeting him for the first time, you already know him like an old friend. I moved out to LA for good to finish school in May 2003. Now we live a block away from each other and I'm almost completely happy, only because I like New York better, but I like LA plenty too.

Oh yeah...don't worry about the age thing. Love is blind, right? I'm 20 and BF is 32 and I couldn't imagine it any other way.

BTW, I think Escrime just went to Iceland with her husband and she said they had an awesome time. Go chill in a hot spring for me

OK! So tommorrow is my last full day in Canada! It really dawned on me yesterday that I would be meeting him in a couple days. Anyways just wanted to share a cute story, and change that pic he hates. :P Soooo, I'm staying with his family, and he has been relocated from the attic to the living room. I guess he keeps his attic apartment somewhat messy, because today his Mom made him clean the ENTIRE thing. HAHAH. Sucka. Thanks for all the concerned and supportive comments! I showed him some and he thought they were uber cute.
