Should I work at Macy's?
Permalink Closed

I was thinking of getting a job there to get the employee discount (this will definintly help with my fall wardrobe buying).   And since I will be moving next year (and getting all new stuff), the discount on buying about $20k of furniture and $10k on other things like decor, linens, dinnerware, small kitchen appliances, etc. would add up.   I only need part-time since I only have a job to pay for my shopping, and part of my car payment.  I don't care much for my current job anymore since I am cut off from earning vacation this year and haven't gotten a raise in 2 years!  If anybody works at Macy's what is the discount percent?

I'm not sure of the discount percentage- but if you are solely working there for the discount, I would make sure they have what you are looking for furniture-wise and housewares-wise if you are going to spend about $30,000 there!  They should pay YOU to work there- I'm sure they still make a ton of money off of you even with the discount.

20% is their discount, proably on %10 on furniture and small appliances.

I worked there a while ago- I think it was 15% on clothes if you work part time, and 10% on electonics/appliances. Also, you have to use their credit card in order to get the discount...no paying with cash or checks, which I found to be very annoying and not worth it.

You also get the discount at the other federated stores (burdines, strawbridge's...I don't know cause there weren't any near us. Also you could use it a Bloomies, but only for 10%)

Oh Macy's sure has stuff I want.  I get the mailings weekly.  I have cut out pictures of items I like so I know what to get when the time comes.   Being able to get the discount only if you use their credit card is ridiculous.   Cash or check seems perfectly fine.  I have their card but it only has a $1500 limit.   I was also thinking that a good time to buy is when they have the Macy's dollars (for every $50 you spend you get $10, $5 for furniture).  But you have to charge it on their card.  So I was wondering if I charged up to $1500, paid it that same day, and would be able to charge $1500 again, numerous times so I can maximize my Macy's dollars (which I can use to buy linens and kitchen items) Of course though, if they wouldn't arrange for something like this to happen for somebody who is going to spend that much at their store, I can always take my business elsewhere.

they'll actually give you an employee card, so your limit might be highter but yes, you can go to the CS desk and pay it off with cash/check. I don't think it let you combine the bonus dollars with the discount though. Actually, I'm pretty sure they don't. Honestly, it was a really crappy job and I hated it there- don't do it just for the discount.

I worked there when I was in HS, about 10 years ago. The discount then was 20%, but I am assuming larger-ticket items are 10%. They did have special events throughout the year where employees could get additional percentages off.

I Love Choo is right, though -- you have to use your (high interest) store credit card to get the discount, so if you are buying big-ticket items that will take a few months to pay off, the discount may not be worth it.

I don't know about Macy's,  but Saks and it's daughter stores (Bergners, Herbergers, Boston Store, Proffits, McCraes, Carsons, and Younkers) give a 20% discount, 10% on electronics and maybe even furniture, which ups to 25% after a year.  I think that is a great discount.  You have to out it on your store credit card though.
