how would you go about this?

my company does a lot of work for kaplan. i do a portion of that work and have a direct contact at kaplan that i've been working with for about 4 years. i want to take a kaplan test prep class, and i would like to see if i can get a discount on it (they're $1300).

what do you guys think would be the best way to go about it. i don't actually want to go through one of the partners (they're kind of a**holes and i would prefer to keep my plans underwraps until they're finalized) but i don't want to get in trouble. i'm thinking of just sending the contact an email along the lines of " i'm interest in a class, i was wondering if you had any experience with them or knew of any specific programs that were well recommended/evaluated by students"

do you think that would work? any other suggestions? my dad is going to help me pay for it so it's not really a money issue, but i don't want to pay full price if i don't have to.

I think emailing your contact is a good idea and just hope that he/she mentions whether you would be able to get a discount. Maybe you could also ask if your contact knows if it is possible to hire any of the teachers as private tutors because you aren't sure whether you have the time/money to commit to a full course so that if there is any way for you to get a discount your contact will be sure to mention it.

Just wanted to add - I do know that many Princeton Review and Kaplan teachers offer private tutoring but usually it is as a supplement to the classes and I don't know what the official policy is since I doubt the companies would be supportive of their teachers teaching the methods and pocketing the money but you could just play dumb and ask anyway.

do you talk w/ your contact often?  maybe you could just bring up your plans during the course of your next conversation and ask if he/she knows of any discounts you might be eligible for.  and then see where the convo goes from there.

i think you'll be able to get a discount.  when i took kaplan (summer of '98, to prep for the lsat) i just asked the guy signing me up, who i didn't know or anything and he gave me one.  i think it was called a student discount or something but really i think he just gave me a couple hundred dollars off because i asked.

i'd throw out a "are there any coupons or discounts that are available for the class?" in the email and see what comes out.
