long puffer coats- practical?*Update*

Long puffer coats have been on my mind lately.........but Im usually so conservative that i feel that it may be too trendy of a style for me- what do you all think? have they proven practical for you? how do you pick one that wont have one looking like the michelin man? any recs or favs?

so far I am eyeing the Jcrew ones from this year and years past (via ebay) but ive been too apprehensive to pull the trigger

I dunno...one of my girlfriends has one and wore it all last winter...I think it came to about mid-calf on her...she's petite. It's not my style, but she seemed comfy in it, and I don't think she had to much trouble with it being to bulky.

I live in Boston and have had puffer coats for as long as I can remember, I don't think they're trendy, more of a necessity! Mine is from the J Crew outlet and I think it's really flattering, the shape is very much like the J Crew one you posted, it's fairly fitted through the torso and has a slight a-line to just above my knee. It's so light that it doesn't feel bulky at all and it really is the only thing that I wear on those freezing days.

yes! GET ONE they are very practical in colder climates!
i have a dark grey one that hits mid-thigh that i love.
i got mine at loehmanns for under a hundred bucks 2 years ago and it is SO perfect for winter!
like "twinkle star" i also dont think they are trendy, just practical

I could have written this, except than I bought it when I was living in Buffalo. Mine has a little fur around the hood. I used it a lot in Buffalo, and still use it in Rome when it's really cold at night. It's very practical (you can machine wash it) and warm. Mine hits right above the knee and it's black, a good color because it really goes with everything.

I have one from Michael Kors and I use it when the weather gets really cold, its very practical and the way it is cut doesn't add that much bulk. I think the belted one you posted will look feminine and not give you too much bulk.

I have the same one as XtinaStyles in the khaki/green color posted in the picture. Being in NC, I only wear it a few times a year, but on those occasions when it gets cold enough, it's really the only coat I have that does the trick for me.

:) Goes to show I know nothing about winter wear. A few thin layers of l/s shirts + a jacket is good enough for me!

They're not my style, so I have zero experience with their warmth. I also don't think of them as trendy. But if it helps, a darker color like navy or black looks more serious than say a silver or pink. A darker color should make you look less bulky too.

I live in Charlotte, NC, so I don't have first-hand experience with the function of a puffer.  I can say that the long ones (the really long ones that go to your calves) sometimes look out-of-place--esp when the person has to walk indoors.  Now, I know, for those of you in Buffalo, Montana, NYC, etc., performance is important.  My fashion comment is regionally-focused.

Some of the smaller, lighter-weight puffers can be collapsed and bagged too, which makes them convenient in that sense.

I have one that I bought when I had a trip to New York planned during winter. It was useful then but I really haven't worn it since (I live in California). I can see that it would be a great buy if you live somewhere that gets really cold.

You guys have me interested in a puffer coat. I don't really like how they look but I've been wanting a good warm coat - my peacoats are fine most of the time but I need one I can play in the snow in, or wear when I plan to be outside for a couple hours.

Anyone have experience with a VS puffer coat? Are they warm? I sort of like this one but I'd like something I can take skiing when I go to VT next month (or is a puffer coat not the way to go with that? I have been skiing exactly once before so I really don't know what I'm doing)

I just bought a long puffer coat that looks like the first J Crew one posted on clearance for $15 at target... in case you are still in the market. I needed it for "snow dates" with my nephews and for $15 thought it was a great deal.

I wore it tonight (it is 28 here this evening) and it was quite warm!

They had white, brown, black and deep purple.
