Retinoid users - need input!
Permalink Closed

I started using a .01% generic tretinoin gel in March or April. It worked great until around July or August, and then it quit working. In September, I went to the derm, who put me on Yaz and gave me samples of Differin (.3%) and Retin-A Micro cream (.1%). Neither of them is working and I keep breaking out like a beast with those gross ones that are filled with pus. Sorry, it's gross.

Also, since I started with the retin-a/differin (I'm actually using the retin-a now since I ran out of differin samples), my skin has gotten SO oily.

I'm going to go back to my derm (I need to make an appointment), but what kind of retinoids have you had success with? Also, have you had any luck with products that fade hyperpigmentation (like acne scarring?) I asked my derm about Tri-Luma and Tazorac, but she seemed wary of prescribing either of them to me.

I should probably say, I stopped taking Yaz - she only gave me 2 samples and I need to go to the doctor and get her to prescribe it, so I'm not sure if that's part of the problem.

I had used Ziana for years (its retin A plus an antibiotic) - at first I broke out then after a month or so of horror, my skin seemed to have less breakouts.

I think with your case you are switching it up/using too many diff things. You need to allow your some time to adjust to each diff product. I would think that going on/off of birth control would definitely affect your skin, as I broke out like a teen when I went off a year ago or so. I am surprised that the same doc is playing with your meds so much... I'd say its not so much the retinoid as being consistent with 1 product and staying on BC.

My derm makes me come in every 3 to 4 weeks to check on me. It's a pain the neck, and I hate paying the co-pay every 3 weeks, but at least when something changes with my skin I have a few seconds facetime with him. It sounds like your med routine just needs some consistency to take the full effect (which must be really hard to do, you'r finishing up law school, right?)

I've used retin-a for around 10 years and have loved it...like the other posters say, it does take a while to your skin to get used to. I never had oily skin with it, though; mine tends to dry out and get flaky if I overdo it, so I have to moisturize like a fiend, and I usually skip a day or two during the winter. I do hear that there's a difference between the gel and the cream versions of the product, though - one is supposedly better for oily skin, but I can't remember which.

Thanks ladies! I do need consistency. Getting back on Yaz will probably help. I'm definitely going to go back to the derm. I used up my Differin samples first and then switched to the RAM. Their website said you should see full results after 7 weeks, and I've been using it for 8 weeks, so...

Boots, you're right - one more semester of law school to go!
