It's ridiculous how obssessed with this show I am! I've been hanging out on a Lost message board (that I found thanks to another poster on this site!) and people have been tossing out theories. Most theories are science fiction based. But I read that the writers have said that they used Stephen King's 'The Stand' as inspiration for this show. If that's the case, then it's not really sci-fi, it's much more simple. 'The Stand' is based on the oldest plotline in the book, good vs. evil. To me, that makes so much more sense than time travel (too hackneyed), nanotechnology (too complicated), purgatory (too obvious), ect.
For those of you that watch, we can see two groups starting to form, or at least two opposing leaders emerging (Jack and Locke). I would be soooo excited if this went in the direction of 'The Stand' type of plotline. Sci-fi seems too easy and overdone and I would be disappointed.
Okay, I'm done now. Anyone esle have any thoughts? I know, I'm a dork!
I don't think it will be a division b/w good and evil per se. I think the two groups would be based on how they want to continue their existance on the island. Locke is preaching the message that people should embrace what the island has to offer; he sees it as a spirtitual place because he thinks it cured him of whatever kept him in the wheelchair. Locke wants to find out what the island is all about. Jack thinks there's a scientific explanation for everything they've seen and his main goal is to get people off the island, not to understand why they're stranded on it. I don't see the two groups trying to kill each other off or anything.
I just hope that they don't bring aliens into it. That hatch is pretty weird, I hope there's a non-alien explanation for it.

sorry, this made me LOL at work!! anyways, i read in the paper that there was this Lost convention (close to me too, so mad i didn't hear about it!) and the writers or whoever said that they ARE gonna go in the science-fiction direction. they said look for things to get a lot weirder in season 2. i can't remember the exact quotes, but i remember thinking "damn it, i hate stuff like that!" hopefully it was just some extra blowing smoke, cuz i really don't want it to get "unexplainable" & i definitely agree that i would prefere a "non-alien" explanation for the hatch!!
yeah, i don't want to see any aliens either! i like the idea of it being due to some larger thing about them being meant to be there so they can work out the troubles from their pasts, or that they're all tied to each other in some way. one example: someone pointed out a while back that the box company Hurley owned was where Locke must have worked (both had mentioned the box company briefly). so i hope it's about something like that, not crazy aliens or science experiments!
I'm sticking by my good/evil theory. Especially with the writers stating that what is in the hatch will have an effect on Locke (coupled with The Stand idea). We've already seen some foreshadowing of Locke's not-so-good side.
I don't know if any of the cast that we have already met will go 'evil,' but what about The Others? Aren't they already pretty bad?
And as far as the idea of The Stand, that raises a question as to what the heck is going on in the rest of the world seeing as in the stand a "sickness" wiped out all but the chosen good and evil. Also, in The Stand, those who were called to either good or evil were led there through dreams. Locke has some pretty crazy dreams. I really, really think that it will go in that direction.
I seriously doubt that there will be an alien plotline (if I remember correctly, the writers said that wasn't the case).
i love charlie but i could see him going bad. he is so bent on protecting claire and not listening to anyone else about it, and he was pretty cruel to the french woman when they finally found her with the baby. yes, she'd stolen him, but she's also insane and has been living alone for 16 years after her own daughter was taken; he could have shown some compassion. plus, he took one of the virgin mary statuettes with heroin! stay clean, charlie!

I wouldn't be surprised if they kill Charlie off. They did say that main characters would get hacked. And he seems like a good candidate. He's a main character, but not as pivitol as others. And the heroine story line is pretty weak--it needs some oomph to keep going.
