DH and I have twin nephews who are five and a half, and I'm told they are pretty smart for their age. We often have trouble buying gifts for them. This year I was thinking of getting them some classic board games - Battleship, Operation, etc. - but nothing that requires too long of an attention span (like Monopoly or Life).
What are some others I should be looking for? Give me some good 'old board game' suggestions.
Moms: is this a gift that seems appropriate? Would it be appreciated? Their parents (DH's brother and his wife) are the opposite of down-to-earth. They're kind of cookie-cutter, McMansion people. Books aren't popular in their house, nor are arts/crafts, or anything that resembles education. That cuts down a lot of our usual 'kid gifts.'
I always loved Operation and Clue. The boys in my family range from 4 to 16 and they all play Jenga - together - which I find weird but that's a whole other story ;)

I love Sorry and Clue, and Monopoly has a card game version that captures everything good about monopoly, except they've made it so it's a 30 minute game!
I saw that Target had a bunch of games for $7 and $10 - so I got Battleship, Twister, Sorry and Operation.
I loved Clue too. Maybe next year - although they have a few different editions now and one said ages 5 and up. I had Mouse Trap when I was a kid! So fun, but never worked quite right.
Update: Sorry was a hit, and got played immediately, even though neither of them bothered to look at the rules. The other big hit was a pack of UNO cards. That's an addictive game!
