I have TMJ (jaw thing) and recently had to go in to have my teeth re-shaped so that my jaw sits right and stops hurting. This cost $590. It was run through medical since dental won't pay for any of it (don't even get me started on how stupid this concept is).

I get a phone call today from the receptionist at the dental office and she proceeds to tell me that when she called to check up on the claim, she was told that I have a $1000 deductible. This means that I have to pay ALL of the $590 out of pocket. Really, I think I might kill someone.

The first time I had this done to my teeth (back in 2000), it was through different a different insurance company and at least half of it was paid for.

$1000 deductible. Absolutely freakin' ridiculous. I'm going to scream now....

Had to vent.  Guess my Visa bill's going up by $590.

That seems ridiculous that your deductible cost that much.  Is your insurance through your work?  I don't know who you have, but mine is through my work, and I'm always given options of which deductible to choose.  It doesn't seem right that you didn't know yours was that much!  I'm sorry, that sucks.

You know, I think I probably did know about the deductible, but forgot about it when I had this thing submitted.  But now I'm thinking that there's something wrong and my deductible should only be $500.  I'm going to have to talk to my parents tonight.

Basically, there are 2 different plans I could have chosen when I signed up for this:

Buy-Up Plan:

Network Deductible-$250

Non-Network Deductible-$750

Core Plan:

Network Deductible-$500

Non-Network Deductible-$1000

I chose Core Plan (prob for the lower amount of $ coming out of each paycheck), and pretty much assumed I was on Network, because I swore my provider was listed.

This seriously sucks.  I think my parents will help me out with some, but yeah, it's definitely going on Visa right now.  I don't want to spend huge chunks of money out of my checking account before my vacation.

Sigh...and my credit card was going to be $150 away from being totally paid off....

Oh, and this plan IS through work..

Honestly, with the price of health care skyrocketing $1000 deductibles in insurance plans are very common.  It just sucked that you didn't know your plan well enough so that you could have planned better for this cost.

That, and as horrible as this sounds, I almost wish I hadn't said anything about my jaw hurting, therefore not having to have a $590 treatment done.

I know originally, I remember thinking "Well, I only go to the doctor for my annual checkups, and never anything else, so I'm not worried about this amount of payment because annuals are covered".  I didn't even know that my jaw treatment would have to be run through medical because my parents dealt with it the last time (in 2000).

And I seriously hate dental because it doesn't cover jack sh*t....

off topic- but what treatment did you have so that your jaw sits right?  I don't have TMJ, but I feel like my teeth don't line up in the back even though I've had braces and retainers for years.

Basically they just re-shaped my teeth by filing them down with an electronic diamond file (no pain, it's just like filing your fingernails).  My dentist would do some filing, check my bite, and file down on more points if needed.

Hmm, i'm pretty sure my jaw is just misaligned, which would require surgery.  Not sure if its worth it.

Yup, I'm thinking it's because the files are actually made of diamond grains. If not, I apparently have a damn good dentist who's apparently worth that money!

Good news: My parents are going to help me out with the cost a little, but for now, my Visa is sad....
