Product advise for "tipping" hair or dying tips

I want to do something fun but not too outrageous with some color in my hair.  I was thinking of adding some burgundy to my tips, maybe even a more true red.   I want to color just at certain tips of my hair.  Similar to this:
Cute short hair for teen girls
Since I'm brunette is it best to lighten those areas first?  Do you think I can do it myself with an OTC box color?

When I was a freshman in college I tried to put red streaks in my hair, but I didn't want to bleach first. I found a dye kit in the drugstore that was supposed to work on dark hair without bleach - I used it but the bright red faded after just one or two shampoos and it was more a burgundy or dark magenta color.

I mention when I did it because it was about 6 years ago, I don't know if the product is still around?
