FWIW, the IUDs that are manufactured now are much more effective than the ones in the days of 'IUD babies' (of which I too know many).

Not at all!  I think they still do have a higher failure rate then, say, the pill.  It might vary between the hormonal and non-hormonal varieties though.

I'm really interested in getting an IUD too. My girlfriend has the one with no hormones and says that when she gets her period it comes with a Heavy flow and lasts longer than it used to. Other than that she loves it. She also said that it hurt when they put it in her, like a piercing! I think I would want the one with hormones, .... I need to look into this more.

What I have been reading is that the one without hormones (Paragard) is safer than the one with (Mirena), however, the Paragard causes heavier periods.

Karina - is the hormonal IUD considered a higher risk than other hormonal BC?  I was under the impression that the hormones were much lower in the IUD than in the Pill because they don't have to circulate around your entire body ...?

From what I read, the hormonal IUD still has the hormones that are absorbed into your bloodstream.  I think I'm going with Paragard.
