Hey everyone! I need to get a birthday gift for a little girl who is turning one. Does anyone have any creative gift ideas? I have no idea what a one yr old would like or want. Thanks!
I have all of these, and my son loves them all. They were all purchased for either last Christmas (8 months old) or at his 1 yr birthday, so they can all be used by your 1 yr old gift recipient :)
-Hokey Pokey Elmo
-Leapfrog Learning Drum
-Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set
I LOVE THIS!!!!!! My son knows all his alphabet, mainly thanks to this!
i second the melissa and doug wooden puzzles, they are fantastic and the only puzzle i will buy. for a one-year old go with one with large knobs on the pieces so she can grasp them easily. melissa and doug make a farm animal themed one that is perfect.
i am a big fan of giving books at this age too. a beautifully illustrated ABC book is a good classic gift. (i have several specific ones that i can suggest if you'd like) i've also given the book called "baby loves" which features the paintings of mary cassatt... it's a very calm, quiet and sweet book.
i go for simple, classics for first birthdays. a one year old isn't going to be upset that you didn't get her what she wanted, but a parent will surely appreciate a "quiet" gift over one that requires multiple batteries and screeches horrificly unnatural sounds and music. i mean... i love hokey pokey elmo and so did my son, but there were many times that i wanted to boot elmo right out the window... i actually had to hide him in the closet on several occasions for weeks at a time to regain my sanity.
I have to agree with the learning toys / books. I have done books - fun, but also educational books - for one y/o girls, and for our nephew (who turned one y/o on 2/14/05), I sent some toys that are also meant to educate.
The best thing I have found to do (I have no children) is go to a toy store - once I went to Babies 'R Us, and once to a...Kay-Bee toys, I think it was...and ask a SA there. I have always found that there is someone who knows the appropriate toys / section for that age and will willingly help me choose educationally-oriented materials.

also, books are great cuz they don't take up so much space!!!! all those kids toys add up very quickly! when i used to baby-sit, the lady would always complain about how her house was taken over by kids toys everywhere.

Books are a nice gift, but honestly, one year olds don't have much interest in them. Getting them to sit on your lap to listen to a story and look at the pictures is quite a task!

i guess this is a case where it depends on the child... my son has always loved and sat still for storytime. i tire of reading before he tires of listening sometimes.
oh well, just another thing to think about alb... every child has a unique temperment! include the gift receipt and don't sweat it too much. good luck!
