HELP--BIG MOVE TODAY!
Permalink Closed

I am moving today (Wednesday) to Chicago.  I am in Madison, WI so it's not too far away, I am just freaked out about moving to a new city where I don't know anyone!  My BF is moving, but not for a month, and he won't even be able to come see me and our new apartment until Friday.  I have been totally cool and excited about it until this morning, which is usually how I work--I am fine right up to the point where something happens and then I freak out.  What if I don't make any friends?  I am driving down there with my two cats in the car and what if something happens to one of them?  What if I HATE HATE HATE my new apartment or my new job (starts Monday)???  Please, I completely realize I am just freaking out for dumb reasons, but I need some words of encouragement!

This always happens to me the day I am moving. Try to calm down, don't rush things, and even if I know you'll have an EXTREMELY busy day, try to find 15 minutes to relax and eat something you love (calories don't count on moving days).

Besides, how could it be possible that nobody would want to be friend with such a sweet, lovely girl ?

Yay!

Repeat after me:  I WILL BE FINE!  I WILL BE FINE!  I WILL BE . . .

When FH and I moved from Portland to Spokane, I went through the exact same thing.  We actually moved together, but he only stayed for 3 days before he went back down to Portland to finish working his last 2 weeks.

Believe it or not, the experience was quite empowering (cheesy, I know).  He was in Spokane long enough to move the heavy stuff, and then I got to play house and put everything wherever I wanted!  And, I figured out how to hook up the TV and computer all by myself!  I put together our furniture with power tools! And I learned how to pump my own gas (which sounds a little silly but they pump it for you in Oregon so I was pretty proud of myself)!  It was a great time - I had to rely only on myself during that time and it went just fine.  It was nice to reafirm that after being an 'us' for so long.

Also, you can mapquest all the shopping locals and go check them out whenever and for as long as you like!  Going shopping in my new city really helped me, because it was something familiar - shopping is pretty much the same everywhere you go!

And you always have friends here !

Welcome to Chicago!  I live in the city and love it.  I think you're gonna be just fine, and I think as soon as you adjust you'll have a great time and love it too.  You'll have no problem making new friends either.  If you don't mind me asking - what part of Chicago are you moving to?  And where's your new job?

If you have any questions about anything, feel free to PM me.

Thank you girls SOO much!  I really appreciate all the encouragement!

ShopChicago33:  I think the apartment is in the Lakeview neighborhood, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was untrue because I know so little about Chicago.  I am working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital downtown, and I am actually really excited about the job, I am just being a big baby right now.

Well, I am leaving in about an hour--wish me luck!

I live in Lakeview!  Sheffield and Diversy.  You'll love it, it's a great neighborhood.  Hey, if you need a friend, I'm there

What do you do for a job?
