I Need Your Help! Black Designer Bag....
Permalink Closed

I'm in the market for a black designer bag.  my bf is paying for it since i was such a help when his parents were in town and he recently came into a lot of money (that sounds bad/shady).  i want it for almost everyday use.  that i can use for the next 5 years.  My thoughts are:

#1 something like this chanel bag in black (but a lot of girls are saying they don't use it a lot, so i think it might have to wait)

#2 YSL in black

L5429 Small Ruffled Hobo with Leather Studded Handle 850.00

# 3 or balenciaga (which is knocked off by everyone and their mother!)

#4 or the epi alma

Alma(lilykind...you almost made me forget the alma)

or any other suggestions.  or if you want to share what your dream black bag is.  i'm DEFINITELY NOT SET ON THOSE BAGS.  also, i have a MJ bag in white, botkier in pewter, soon to have Kooba in Luggage, Gucci (tan, but i don't want black), and Dior (saddle in black) so i would like a different designer....sorry if i'm picky!

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME....

That YSL is very very beautiful...but you could also get yourself a Celine Boogie or a Boston Boogie!

shopgirl82, the Celine Boogies are 99 million times nicer in person. I saw a girl with a camel one in Beverly Hills and my jaw literally dropped to the floor and drool was sliding out of my mouth.

I have to wait two weeks until I go back to NYC though to get a bag (still not 100% decisive yet), but I'm waiting eagerly.

I just bought a BCBG in black that is similar to the Marc Jacobs Venetia in shape but lighter and with less buckles and stuff..

It was $525 at a boutique in Key West. Beautiful and i know i will use it forever.

i know.  i love it too.  the one thing that i love about the saddle bag, botkier, multipocket, bcbg ones that i have is that they are shoulder bags.  i think i might get sick of carrying a bag.  shoot shoot shoot.  this is turning out to be harder than i thought (nice situation, but harder than i thought!)

hmmm...i'm definitely partial to chanel so take this for what it's worth:  the chanel classic is the kind of bag you could use everyday forever and still be able to give to your grandkids.  i got mine in the red lambskin (because red is more me and the lambskin felt like butter) but if you get it in the caviar leather (which holds up better than the lambskin) in black, it will seriously never go out of style or look particularly worn either.

my second choice would be the alma, the boogie doesn't really do it for me but then i've never seen it irl either.

hth and congrats!

Re my Chanel bag: When I bought it I was planning on using it as one of my regular bags. The SA told me that it wasn't an everyday bag--the leather is so soft that it scratches can easily scratch. There is another leather version of the same style--a rougher finish, and for the life of me I can't remember what it was called. Also, my bag is a little small to carry my wallet, my glasses case as well as a cell phone.

Well, at the rate I'm going I could be dead long before it wears out.

Whichever one you choose, use it and enjoy it!

I would buy the Chanel because it will undoubtedly be in style 5 years from today.

i love the chanel b/c i know it will be a classic and you can carry it until you are 80 years old... but- it may be too small...

i also like the alma but i, too, would tire of carrying it...

this is tough!  if you want a small bag i say get the Chanel- but if you want something larger- i like the YSL

you know, you could always get the chanel classic in the larger size, that should be big enough, no?

although, the alma really is beautiful as well...

equiress-the chanel i would get would be large (the one in the pic is large) and leather.  i agree it could be carried everyday if i got the right bag, i'm just scared that even if i got the right bag i might be scared to carry it everyday.

bex- i do like the ysl cuz it is a shoulder bag.

jestillman-i think i like the alma cuz it's not knocked off, and all the women who carry it are tres classy!

i'm still super uncertain, but you ladies have made a lot of great points, exactly what i was looking for!!!  thanks for all your responses, i'm giving it a couple days and making the decision on friday after i have seen the celine boogie bag in real life.

Chanel or YSL

Either of those bags would be stunning!  I think I would go for the Chanel without a second thought.

I like the Chanel and actually dislike the others... I've seen the YSL in person, and I think it looks.. trendy, fashion victim, I guess... But I know I'm in the minority there.

I also really like the Celine boogie..

i've always liked ysl.  do you think a different ysl bag would look better?

i think i'm leaning towards the chanel or ysl.  girls help.!!!  will i really carry the chanel ALMOST EVERYDAY?  do the chanel owners on this board use it as an everyday bag?  or should i wait till i graduate from grad school and get it as a gift then.....thanks so much i really appreciate it.  i think we are going shopping tonight instead of friday.

ok, about the ysl, i haven't seen that particular one irl but i have seen another that was stunning in the pic but disappointing irl...it was from the neiman's last call sale a while back, i think cc posted that she loved it too, i ordered it and then ended up sending it back because it was not all that irl.  so, due to that experience and the fact that this ysl bag you've posted looks similar to that one, i am not crazy about the ysl.

anyway, here's the real question:  if you get the chanel, do you think you will be ok w/ wearing it everyday or will you feel the need to "save" it?  and if you do feel the need to save it, are you ok w/ not getting much wear out of a bag that costs that much?  i personally am in the middle, i don't wear mine everyday (it's red so it doesn't go w/ everything) but i wear it enough to justify the cost to myself, and i get a lot of satisfaction from owning it in general (regardless of cost per wear or whatever, i just like having it.)

only you can say for sure whether you're ready for the chanel or not, and remember, it's not going anywhere, it's a classic, if you want it in a few years, you can still have it.

hth!

For something sooo nice, i'd want a classic that will wear beautifully for years to come.  I'd choose the Chanel (maybe another design if that one doesn't seem practical) or the LV Alma - I love the black Epi Leather!

Congrats on your awesome bag collection!
