Where would you go for a bra fitting?
Permalink Closed

I think most of you know that I write for The Lingerie Post. And that when it comes to getting the correct size bra, I'm an incredibly broken record.

Well, I'm working on an article now to illustrate that most stores aren't very good at figuring out your real bra size, or at least not very truthful when they find that you are wearing a size they don't sell. Basically, I'm getting fitted at a bunch of stores and recording what size they tell me to wear.

I've been to a couple stores already and I have a few more to hit, but I want to make sure I go to all the big ones that people are most likely to go when they think it's time to get fitted - if you had never been fitted and you decided that you wanted to, what store would you go to?

(p.s. slightly related - I just discovered that VS now has DDD and AA styles!)

I'd go to a store with a good selection of different brands -- Bloomingdales, probably, or Saks or Lord and Taylor. Nordstrom, too. Basically, somewhere that had a commitment to customer service and a wide selection of brands/styles to choose from

I've been measured at Fredericks, VS and Linda's (bra boutique in NYC).

I used to work at VS and I was pretty good at just looking and telling you what size you were. But a lot of girls there have no freaking clue how to really measure and tell you a guess! Those girls get paid minimum wage and hardly get taught on how to measure. So with VS, its a hit or miss in my book.

2nd. I wouldn't go to a JCPenney or Sears because they could care less about what I buy and if I needed help; however, Nordstrom is helpful and I got fitted there for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Super helpful and I'm wearing bras that fit perfectly!

And when did VS carry DDDs? I got "fitted" there awhile ago and the sales girl didn't even try to fit me. She asked me what I wore and pretended to size me. She just mentioned a sister size and gave me a couple of bras to try on. VS should not only train those girls to properly fit a customer, but also tell them what to look for in a fitted bra. Of course, I wasn't even wearing the right size then.

Nordies, by far! I'm sorry Tati, but yeah, NEVER EVER GO TO VS. Last time they measured me, they told me I was a 34C. I'm a 34DD *Headdesk*

Plus, when I asked for what they had in 34DD, the SA mentioned a few styles and then also suggested a 36C for a replacement *Headdesk again*

Nordies is where it's at....All the woman did was take her had, put it around my rib cage, under my bust, and rattled off my size like a pro. Ridiculously good!

Tati - I have to admit that I have a pretty poor opinion of mall-type stores for this thing. I know that some mall fitters are great but in general I've not heard of many people having a good experience! Anyway, my article isn't going to try and say "they're all shit, don't shop at any of these stores" but just that people need to do research and be informed instead of totally relying on the fitters, because if they do get a crappy girl and not a Tati, they'll be in the wrong size!

exsupahero - I don't know! I was on the VS website today and saw a DDD category in the bras. I was blown away. Sadly, even though VS now has DDDs available, they still told me to wear a 36D when I went in for a fitting this evening. Um, I'm a 30FF. Also, she measured me over my clothes (which was a cami plus a cardigan).

i used to work in the marshall fields (now macy's) lingerie dept and the gals there were all trained in fittings. it wasn't just wrap a tape measure around people clothes, either. they actually had you go inside the dressing rooms and remove your top and bra and then measure and adjust accordingly. the women that work there were really knowledgeable and VERY helpful. they also have a huge variety of styles and prices, although they do tend to push the wacoal brand. (they ARE great bras, but expensive)
we had tons of very satisfied customers back then.

VS sized me the same way that the expensive bra expert did. Its a measurement. Its math. I don't know how it can go so wrong.

So a little OT but is it just me or are VS bras running really small lately? In regular brands I am a C cup, in VS, sometimes a D is too tight and don't even get me started on the Pink brand. I tried on a D cup that wouldn't even compare to a B in the real world. Are they trying to gain customers by flattering them?

I don't know about the sizing - I wonder if it's like vanity sizing?

It's possible that VS is doing vanity size, but where are their bras made from?

I know bras in asian countries run really small (I would never find a bra there!). My mom has bras that are labled 'D' but I know she's more a 'B'.

Nordstrom hands down has been my best bra fitting so far.

I go to Nordstrom at least once a year to get refitted. When I went from a 34D to a 32 DD and the fitter was able to tell by just looking at me (she measured afterward as well.) Plus, the fitter came into the fitting room with me and looked at me in the new bras I was trying on to inspect the fit. She knew exactly what was going to flatter me the best.

We had a new boutique open up in the Galleria here (houston) called Intimacy. I think they are in a few other cities too. They carry something like 60 different bra sizes and that lady knew her sizing. They take a holistic approach and do not use tape measures which really amazed me because she took a look at me in the dressing room with her and had the exact size I needed when she came back with bras to try on. I was put in the PrimaDonna brand which is pricey but totally worth the money.
